Paul Pettijohn Obituary

YORKTOWN - Paul C. Pettijohn, 72 , loving husband, father and grandfather, triumphantly crossed over to heaven on Nov. 5, 2009.
His family and friends are praising God for his life and are rejoicing in the knowledge that he is wrapped tightly in the loving arms of Jesus. Paul was born on March 9, 1937, in Waverly, Iowa, and has lived in Yorktown, Va., since 1994.
Paul graduated from the University of Iowa in 1959 as a Distinguished Military Graduate. He served for three years on active duty in the Air Force and three years in the reserves as a Logistics Officer. After becoming a Christian while serving in the Air Force, he dedicated his life to ministering to military members and their families. He received a Masters of Divinity degree from Denver Seminary.
Paul and his wife, Lorraine, have devoted their entire lives to serving the Lord. He served as the Executive Director of Officers' Christian Fellowship for 22 years and led the organization through a period of growth. He cultivated Christian military officers at more than 400 installations worldwide and also helped develop two conference centers for military members and their families.
Paul left Officers' Christian Fellowship to become the National Director and then the International Director of the Military Ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, as a full-time missionary. During his career he traveled to more than 60 nations in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Militaries of the World. Along with his loving wife and helpmate, Lorraine, he was passionate in his mission work resulting in many people coming to know Jesus Christ. Most recently he served as the Associate International Director to Africa. Paul was also a well- respected elder and leader at Peninsula Community Chapel.
Paul was an only child and was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Clarice Pettijohn of Shell Rock, Iowa.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, partner and best friend of 43 years, Lorraine Forman Pettijohn of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two beautiful daughters and their husbands, Anne and LTC Rob Borcherding of Fort Riley, Kansas, and Lisa and MAJ Ramey Wilson of Fort Bragg, N.C.; six grandchildren, Katherine, Elizabeth and Meredith Borcherding and Tyler, Seth and Zachary Wilson.
"Paul fought the good fight, Paul finished the race, and Paul kept the faith. Now there is in store for Paul the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge will award to Paul on that day – and not only to Paul, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."
A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church, 235 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601 to be followed by a reception. Funeral services are being provided by Peninsula Funeral Home at www.peninsulafuneralhome.com.

Lorraine,

Our heartrfelt sympathy and prayers are with you. Paul has been a real servant of the Lord and we have had many times of sharing and working together over the years.
I especially appreciated the lunch together with him last summer. He never lost his zeal or desire to be a servant for Christ.
We will continue to pray for you and the family.

Lorraine, Anne and Lisa,
Though we could not be at the memorial service today, Marty Ellen and I devoted the time of the service in prayer for you, and in thankfulness for all that Paul has meant to us and our whole family. We will continue to uphold you all in our prayers.

Lorraine and family, Harlan and I send our deepest sympathies. May God be your guide through these difficult days and know that Paul will be remembered as a Christian Crusader - even right here in the Shell Rock United Methodist Church. Harlan and Linda Pruin

We remember seeing you both this past year at Southern Gables. We all would say that in our limited, earthly knowledge that it was too soon for Paul to go, but fortunately we don't call the "shots"; that's our Lord's timing. Our love to you, Lorrain. You two will never know the riches, salvation and spiritual life you have given to others. Our prayers will be with you and yours as you move ahead without Paul. Our love to you,

We will always remember Paul's enthusiasm and love for His Lord Jesus Christ. He was a visionary and a servant wherever God took him. He was a friend, a mentor, and an example of how to finish well. We will miss him but look forward to our reunion with him!! Paul would say "To God be the Glory! Hallelujah!! Amen!"

Paul was a great mentor, example, and friend. Where I am in ministry to military today has been strongly influenced by his affirmation and testimony. His faithfulness and energy have been inspiring.

What a blessing Paul & Lorraine have been to Calvary Temple, Denver, CO. I remember the influence Lorraine had on our kids in the Children's Dept. and the solid work Paul did when he was on staff. Your example of steadfast faithfulness meant a lot to us through the years. We love you and pray for continued blessings upon you, Lorraine.

Paul was a great example, mentor, and friend to us through his years of service to OCF and after. His gentle and humble spirit, visionary leadership, faithfulness in prayer, the example he and Lorraine set of a loving Christian marriage and home, and his compassionate care were a great blessing to us and our family for many years. We will greatly miss him, but are encouraged and inspired by the consciousness that he has joined Buck and so many others in the "great cloud of witnesses" cheering us on in our walk with the Lord.

As an elder at Peninsula Community Chapel these past years, Paul, more than anyone else I can think of, exhibited a fullness of life and grace that spoke of the love of Christ which lived in him so powerfully.

In my memory, Paul leaves a legacy of fighting the good fight and running the race well. Any of us who had the privilege to know him at all, is better for it.

I grew up surrounded by family friends in OCF and Paul was one of those who mentored me as I grew in that community. Later he was one of several OCF members who helped me maintain my faith during a family crisis that had me questioning God & all I had believed. As an ROTC cadet questioning the place of Christian in the military, he walked me through just war theory, & the necessity for believers to serve. I owe much of how I think of my faith and Christian service to Paul & Lorraine and the rest of that OCF community. I will forever grateful.
