Philip Boykin Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Philip "Flip" Boykin Jr. , 62, of Newport News, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2010.
Flip grew up in Virginia and South Carolina, where he was groomed into a fine outdoorsman at an early age by his father and grandfather. Under the expert tutelage of his father, Flip was molded in to a fine mechanic, mastering nearly all facets of automotive and marine repair. Flip served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard and returned to Newport News where he earned his Associate's Degree in General Studies and "basket weaving" from Thomas Nelson Community College. Flip spent the majority of his career working for Virginia Power as an Equipment and Coal Yard Supervisor. Most recently he was employed with NAPA Auto Parts.
Flip enjoyed hunting, fishing and all things mechanical. He could typically be spotted driving one of his many Ford trucks although some would say he spent more time under them tinkering. Flip, who was known to play Santa Claus, was thoroughly delighted by the smile on a child's face. He was active in numerous youth programs, including York-Seaford Football, the Cub Scouts, and bible school. The impact he had on his children and countless young people will be felt for generations. Like his father before him, he could always be counted on for an enriching story, an enthusiastic joke and a delightful and passionate demeanor.
Flip is preceded in death by his father, Philip S. Boykin Sr.; his grandparents and uncle, Whit Boykin.
He is survived by his mother, Elisabeth Boykin of Seaford; sons, Seth and wife, Kelly of Chesapeake, Philip and fiancE, Stefanie of Williamsburg, and Wayne and wife, Jessica of Newport News; brother, Ted and wife, Louise of Seaford, Va.; sister, Mimsi and husband, Josef Kliment of Lexington, S.C., and sisters, Ellen and Elisabeth of Yorktown, Va.; and his fiancE, Patricia Harrison of Newport News; as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family who are all the better for knowing him and all the sadder at the sudden loss of a man who was passionate about everything he did.
A Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Weymouth Funeral Home by the Rev. Carleton Bakkum of Grace Episcopal Church.
Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

April 24, 2010

I am a friend of Pat's and met Flip through her. I knew from the very first time I talked to him that he was a very special human being. His caring and generous nature were obvious and I loved his sense of humor. There was never a time I was talking with him that he didn't have a couple of jokes or amusing stories to tell - if I wasn't laughing, I was smiling. I was priviledged to witness a revitalization and a zest for living reborn in Pat because of Flip - and from all that I have been told, she had the same impact on him. There is no question that they were "made for each other". He had such a loving spirit and was made to love children.. it was easy to see how children would flock around him... children in their innocence have an innate quality to gravitate toward REAL and loving people. He will be sorely missed by everyone whose lives he touched.... for those special people who took the time to know Flip, loved him. My sincerest condolences to all those mourning the passing of this extraordinary man - and especially Ted, Pat and his children, grandchildren, nieces & nephews. May the Lord Jesus grant you comfort, grace and strength through this difficult time.
Blessings, Jeanne Taylor Amick (from Chambersburg,PA - Flip's old stomping ground).

I remember when I was young my Uncle Flip would visit often. I was always excited to see him. He loved children and always made them feel special.

More recently I have spent a lot of time with him. Usually covered in grease, whenever we had a day off together.

I learned a lot about him from his stories. I wish I could have had more time with him to hear the rest of his stories. I will miss him very much.

Flip was truly a sweet and special person. My favorite memory will always be of my cousin at our last family reunion who was singing with tears in his eyes, a big smile, and his arm around his mother. I will treasure that memory and my dear Cousin Flip always.

Flip,
In the 40 plus years we have known each other there were some great times especially "back in the day" but I think one of the best was when you and I were making a refreshment run to the Cedar Lane 7-11 and you spotted a Newport News Policeman in his patrol car with a headlight out and you got behind him in your car with emergency flashers on and pulled him over to tell him that his headlight was out and that was very dangerous especially on Cedar Lane and he needed to have it fixed asap. He could not apologize enough. I'll bet that officer still remembers that to this day as I do. It was classic Flip. I will always remember all the great times we all had together and you always with a big smile on your face making good times even better. I will miss you very much.

To our dear friend and "brother" Flip. We spent a lot of time together working on junk. "Outcast" comes to mind, along with numerous other relics, too many to count.
You were a really funny guy. You could tell a joke better than most.
We shared many happy times together. May your family cherish all these memories and keep them dear in their hearts. You will be sorely missed. God Bless dear buddy, dear friend.

I am sorry I didn't get the opportunity to personally get to know Flip. It sounds like he was a very caring, loving "Old Soul" the salt of the earth, who will be missed by many. Those lives that he touched they will carry his memory through life being all the more better for having known him. With his passing he is still touching peoples lives by all that he was. We can all only strive to be remembered with such grace as all have remembered Flip. To all his family my heart felt sympathy and to his sons you were blessed having been raised by him

Not only was Flip a big guy he was so big in life that it is impossible for me to sum my feelings about his far to early demise in mere words. I’ve known Flip since he was about six years old and had the good fortune to spend a month with him, his father, grandfather and grandmother and cousin Witty in the Alaska wilds in 1957 (Alaska still a territory) when he was only eight years old. His general conduct, vivid interest and adaptation, under the tutorage of this father and grandparents, was an excellent indicator that he would meet life head-on, adapt to its punches and still enjoy it to its fullest. And I believe he did just that. Over the years I fished and boated with Flip and we had many pleasurable conversations about, well about most everything. He was extremely knowledgeable on anything automotive, marine or mechanical, a good handle on politics and a wonderful sense of humor.
Flip was a good man with a big and generous heart, a person that loved and was proud of his family and someone that will be missed dearly. This Guy, like his father, will never be forgotten. My wife, Esta and I extend our truly heartfelt condolences to Patricia, his sons, his brother and sisters and to all of the other family members. May he rest in peace.

Seth & Family- Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sarrow, may looking back in the memory help comfort you tomorrow. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

My father was someone who made me very proud. I've been driving to become the man that I've looked up to for as long as I can remember. I've ranged from repeating his jokes in first grade, which landed me in hot water with teachers to even going so far as to earn my degree in Public Relations, something that came so naturally to him but required my continual effort. I'll spend the rest of my life chasing the vision I have of my father. I'll value family and friendships above all else, have passion for my work as well as my play, cherish animals and nature, and be generous to those in need. Though I'll never be the all knowing mechanic, expert fisherman or gifted intellectual, I can still hope that somewhere, someone is thinking, "he's just like his father."

Thank you for the sacrfices you made for me!

Flip. I first met you at NAPA AUTO PARTS and could tell instantly you were well versed in the automotive field. It was a joy to keep coming back to buy parts from you and just to shoot the gab about motors and things in general. You will truly be missed by all who came into contact with you. Take care my friend and my thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends. Rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear about Flip-I remember going to the Boykin home to visit Mimsi with my friend Pam Akers. We were just giddy teenagers.Flip was the "big" older brother who we thought was so cool. He was very nice-seemed to be a family trait-To this day,I still remember his Mom as one of the sweetest people I have ever met. May you find peace and comfort in all the memories and wonderful sentiments expressed here and elsewhere.

To my brother Flip,He was my mentor,I wanted to grow up to be just like him. I will miss working on things with him. If I could not fix it I always knew who to call. There were not many days we did not at least talk on the phone to see what the other was doing. Its not a change I'm looking forward to.
