Dear Betty, David, Lisa and the Wallace Family,

I was sorry to hear of Richard’s passing. I am very sorry that I missed the service. I heard this sad news at the JGG airport late last week.

Richard was a dear friend and truly loved to fly. I always enjoyed “hangar-flying” with him and our trips with his “180 hp” Skyhawk (with the added 10 hp booster). When he got that muffler put on, he made me fly it over the airport so that he could hear it from the ground.

I remember flying to Petersburg one Saturday when we flew formation. After a while, I called him and praised his flying skills for altitude hold and steadiness. He replied back: “JD. I have an autopilot”.

He was always fun and helpful. He often offered those sardines that he kept in his hangar too. I would go anywhere with him but I could not handle that.

I remember the beautiful fall trip to the Shenandoah Valley in the fall. What beauty.

This man was a true gentleman and friend.

Take care,

JD Brooks

Richard, It has taken me a while to come to grips with you being gone. You and I have shared a lot of time together over the last 32 years, they were awesome years, we laughed, we cried, we learned from each other, mostly me from you. I will miss you my brother, you will always be in my heart and you will be in my daily thoughts.

JW and I are going to miss Richard so much. JW thought of Richard as an older brother. Our prayers and thoughts are with you always. Love, JW & Jeannie

"The Lord is my pilot, I shall not go adrift; He lighteth my passage across dark channels; He steereth me through the deep waters, He keepeth my log. He guideth me by the evening star for my safety's sake. Yea, though I sail mid the thunders and tempest of life, I shall fear no peril for Thou art with me. The vastness of thy sea upholds me. Surely fair winds and safe harbors shall be found all the days of my life; And I shall moor, fast, and secure, forever. Amen

I was 7 years old on V-J day and the soldiers and sailors of WWII were the heroes of my youth. I stand in awe of the survivors of the Indianapolis disaster and thank your family for the suffering you endured for me and all other Americans. Thank you and may God bless you.

To The Wallace Family,

We are so sorry to hear of Mr.Wallace passing. He & Mrs. Wallace were like another set of grandparents to myself & sisters as he would make sure that we would get on the bus in the morning & allow us to play in the field. He was such a wonderful man & will be missed by many, but never forgotten.

Richard, you have brought so much joy to our family in the short time we have known you. My husband always had the utmost respect for you he will always remember your genorosity. I will always remember the great hugs and lets not forget the jet ski ride you gave me. That day I was holding on so tight not to let go, that is how I will hold on to the memories.

Hi. Daddy, I know you are on the Internet. I enjoyed the years I worked for you. You taught me a lot, thanks. I guess we taught each other. You are my sun shine, and off you go into the weld blue yonder. I love you Daddy. Your baby girl Cindy.

Grandaddy,
You may be in heaven now although you will never be forgotten. It is a wonder that your heart could even fit inside your chest because it was so large and filled with so much love. You were a true role model to your grandson Doug...from race cars, to running heavy equipment, your love for flying, and never giving up on anything you put your mind to (I now know where my husband gets this from). Thank you for giving me a special place in your heart when we met over ten years ago. It is an honor to now be a Wallace. I am so happy that our son Dylan had the opprotunity to know his great-grandaddy! You were giving him high fives up to the day before you passed. You forever had a smile on your face...especially when "the ladies" were around. We are sad that you have passed but are happy that you are no longer in pain. You will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
All our love,
Doug, Kristy and Dylan Wallace

Richard was my Father-in-law, but he always treated me as a Son. When my Father passed in 2004 he stepped in and filled an empty void in my life. He was a very Loving and Giving man and he was a true Patriot in every sense of the word. He loved life, and lived it everyday, his faith was well founded. It gives me comfort to know now he is no longer in pain, and is with a higher Authority.

I did not know Mr. Wallace nor any member of his family. However, when I read of his survival of the sinking of USS Indianapolis in World War II, I wanted to acknowledge and honor a true Naval Hero. To have survived such a terrible ordeal, when so many of his shipmates did not, is surely a tribute to his courage and determination. I can believe that his experience affected him throughout his life and made him a better man.

Richard was one of the most decent and kind men we have known. He and Betty loved their family, and also took care of their friends and neighbors. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him. Our sincerest condolences go to Betty,David and Cindy, and their spouses, Lisa and Elvis, who Richard considered another daughter and son, and to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will miss our dear neighbor and friend.
