He was a proud diesel boat submariner. After resigning his commission in 1967, Bob spent the rest of his career in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry starting at Newport News Shipbuilding. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1990 and had been employed by various shipyards in New York, New Jersey, Saudi Arabia, Baltimore and Tidewater, and at the time of his death was a Subcontract Administrator at Northrop Grumman Newport News.

Heilman; and two beloved grandchildren, William Robert and Sarah Elizabeth Heilman of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda H. and Stephen Hyslop of Hilton Head Island, S.C., a niece, Dr. Natalie Hyslop, and nephew, Dr. Robert Hyslop; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Mae and George Pinyatello of Turkey, N.C., two nieces, Elizabeth King and Amy Lennon, a great-nephew, Zachary King; his adored Scotty Angus and Himalayan cat, Rosie.
At his request there will be no service. Friends are invited to call at his residence. Bob was a gentle, kind and giving man whose family was his world. He will be much missed.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Kevin Wilson and the staff at Maryview Hospital for their attentive and loving care. Cremation Society of Virginia, Hampton Roads office is assisting the family.

Hartman family,

I was so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He and I were Battalion mates our first two years at the Academy and also classmates at Submarine School following graduation. Bob served his country faithfully while on active duty and more so afterward from the civilian sector.

He will be missed by all his classmates, but he will never be forgotten.

Peg,you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

God Bless,

Walt '62

I am a long distant friend of Bob's at the Pascagola, MS shipyard. We never met, but talked often enough to be good friends. Because of our age, I am 68, Bob and I had a lot in common including our appreciation of family. Bob will be sincerely missed. He was a great shipbuilder. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I first worked with Bob in the Sourcing department but have moved on to Cost Engineering. Bob was the "go-to" guy for a lot of things because of the wealth of knowledge he held. He and his contributions will be missed and it is doubtful that anybody can fill his shoes! The Ship Repair estimating team expresses deep condolences to the family.

My condolences to the Hartman family on the loss of Bob. I've worked with Bob on several contracts over the past ten years and always considered him a good source for information. Rare was there a meeting with Bob when there wasn't a "gray boat" story waiting to be told. His experience will be missed here at the yard.

I first met Bob at a company we both worked in Virginia Beach about 12 years ago. I was always impressed by his knowledge of the marine industry and stories he had of the experineces in his life. I am happy to say I continued to work with him when he became a subcontract administrator for NGSB-NN. Bob will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences go out to his wife and family.

As a fellow diesel boat era submariner, I too mourn Robert's passing. We have become the latest "last man out" fraternity and one shipmate's loss is a loss to all. I am the webmaster of the USS Sea Lion SS-315 webpages and will notate Robert's departure on eternal patrol in our archieves.
