Robert ARTIS Obituary

TOANO - Robert Harold Artis, 79, departed this life on Aug. 12, 2010, in Toano, Va.
Born in Doddsville, Ill., on July 30, 1931, he was a humble man who overcame poverty by his strong work ethic and his will for self-education through avid reading. Service to his Country as a Korean War Veteran, and reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant, became one of his proudest moments.
After the Korean War, he served as a Civilian Personnel Specialist at the Pentagon, as well as the Smithsonian. Given the opportunity to retire early, he did so and spent the fun years uncovering and collecting the treasures of the world.
He fathered two sons, first-born, Robert H. Artis II and the late John Michael Artis by Mary Francis Johnson-Flowers. He leaves a loving family and many caring friends. A "Special Ray of Sunshine" for Kim Marshall.
"To all of his family and friends who have offered their support during his passing, my heart has been touched everlasting". To my family, teammates and friends who have supported Melissa and I during this time of life, thank you for the love and compassion you have shown us. Also, we would like
to thank the nurses at Sentara Home Care Services for all their assistance and guidance. Special thanks to all the helpers and volunteers that cared for "Pop", our sincere appreciation.
Arrangements are private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Institute for Cancer Research -www.aicr.org. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
