Rose LEE Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Rose S. Lee, 75, passed away Jan. 7, 2010, in Newport News, Va.
She was born in New York City, Aug. 19, 1934, and was the eldest daughter of the late Annie Shelton Parker of East Elmhurst, N.Y.
A lifelong educator, Rose retired from the New York City Department of Education as the Principal of the Walter Bishop Elementary School in Jamaica, N.Y., after 36 years of service. Rose and her husband David Marshall Lee have resided in Newport News for the last 15 years. She attended Hampton University in Hampton, Va., American University in Washington, D.C., and completed her graduate studies at Columbia University in New York City. Rose was a member of the Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Rose is survived by her loving husband, David Marshall Lee; son, Michael David Lee of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Willa A. Parker of East Elmhurst, N.Y.; nephews, Ross Parker of East Elmhurst, N.Y., and Rayford (Dionne) Davis of Washington, D.C.; niece, Joyce Davis of Atlanta, Ga.; a dedicated friend, Clarita (Millard) Gay of Newport News, Va.; and a host of loving family and friends. Rose was deeply loved and her kind, generous spirit will be held in sweet remembrance.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in the name of Rose S. Lee to the Autism Society of America, 7910 Woodmont Avenue, Suite 300, Bethesda, MD 20814. Mrs. Lee was my elementary school principal at P.S. 160 in Queens, New York. Luckily, I never had to go to her office for anything, but when I saw her in the hallways or the cafeteria, she always had encouraging words. She was a beautiful woman. My condolences to the Lee family.

We have known Rose for at least 35 years. We were both principals in the New York City school system. She was a unique person, loved by her teachers and students. I retired to my home, Portsmouth, Va. and she retired to the neighboring city of Newport News. She was an asset to any place that she happened to be. She will be sorely missed.

Rose was always a joy to see when she would visit Mary Immaculate Hospital Lab. She was what we called a "regular" and we got to know her smiling face very well over the years. When I think of Rose it puts a smile on my face. I see her beautiful flowers, her smile as she waves, her special yard characters that have names, and her youthful stride as she walked. How blessed I am to know her & Dave. My dog and I will miss her.

Rose will be greatly missed. She was a wonderful neighbor and we will miss seeing her working in her yard, walking in the neighborhood and most of all, her friendly conversation whenever she saw you.
