WILLIAMSBURG - Sandra Binek House, 66, died on Aug. 29, 2010, in Williamsburg, Va.
Sandie was born April 30, 1944 in Bismarck, N.D., attended high school in Colville, Wash., and graduated from Dickinson High School in 1962. She attended Dickinson State College and graduated from North Dakota State University, Fargo, N.D., in 1966, with a degree in Home Economics majoring in Foods and Nutrition. Her dietetic internship was completed at King County Hospital, Seattle, Wash. In 1967, she was commissioned in the Navy, Medical Service Corps, first serving as Clinical Dietitian at San Diego Naval Hospital, then as Chief Dietitian at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. During her 26 years of active and reserve service, she served as Fleet Nutritionist on the USS George Washington (CVN 73) and the USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20). In 1994, she retired with the rank of Commander. Navy decorations included Joint Service Commendation, Navy Commendation, National Defense Service (23) and Armed Forces Reserve. Her civilian employment included the Navy Food Services Systems Office, General Services Administration and the American Frozen Food Institute, all in the Washington, D.C. area.
She married Thomas B. House, on Jan. 1, 1987, at the Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. They resided in the Ford's Colony community in Williamsburg, Va., since 1987. They were members of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. At Ford's Colony, she was a golfer, wrote articles on fitness and nutrition for the monthly newsletter, started the Ford's Colony Walkers Club and was a member of the garden club and coined the words "yardener/yardening" for one who does both yard and garden work.
Sandie was an amateur genealogist and member of the Norse Federation and the Bismarck–Mandan Genealogical Historical Society. As a charter member of the Women in Military Service for America (WIMSA) Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, she spoke to organizations promoting the memorial. A longtime member of the Christopher Wren Association and fan of Humphrey Bogart, she became an instructor, conducting a "Bogart Film Festival," presenting the backstory to his classic films. To all the Bogart fans "Here's looking at you, kid."
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Louise Snortland Binek.
Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Thomas; his children, Barbara O'Mara (Ron) of Danville, Calif., Thomas II of Colorado Springs, Colo., Todd (Tuni) of Apache Junction, Ariz., Fred of Falls Church, Va., and Elise (Steven Chesney) of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Frank W. Binek (Kelly) of Rosarito, Mexico, and Gary E. Binek (Clova) of Colville, Wash.; one niece, Roberta Kirk (Ken) and grand-nephew, Kevin, of Crestwood, Ky.; two nephews, Bryan Binek of Las Vega, Nev., and Bradley Binek (Melissa) of Goodyear, Ariz. A previous marriage ended in divorce.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 215 Richmond Rd., Williamsburg. Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
