Steven JOHNSTON Obituary

TAMPA, FLA. - Steven Kyle Johnston, 48, died on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, in Tampa.
He was born in Madison, W.Va., and raised in Newport News, where he attended Denbigh High School. He was a welder at Newport News Shipbuilding, for more than 15 years and was considered by many to be the best at his trade. Like his father, who committed over four decades of his life to building the world's best ships, Steve proudly carried on the family tradition. He was a small-engine expert, able to fix just about anything that came into the family's Newport News hardware store for repair. He also enjoyed racing and golf.
Steve is survived by his parents, Pete and Joan Johnston, and Margaret Lynn Burt; son, Jason A. Johnston and his wife, Natasha; grandson, Brady, all of Newport News; son, Nathan Tyler Johnston of Bealeton; brother, Michael D. Johnston and his wife, Donna of Albany, Ga.; sister, Diana L. Bristow of Newport News; brother, David T. Johnston and his wife, Kelly of Charlottesville; one nephew; and five nieces.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kyle Petty's Victory Junction Gang charity at www.victoryjunction.org.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6812 River Road, Newport News, VA, 23607.
Arrangements are under the care of Riverside-Altmeyer Funeral Home 7415 River Rd., Newport News, VA 23607 www.Altmeyer.com View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Steve was a great guy,He was a good friend to my brother Kevin,he always treated me more like a little brother,I went many years without seeing him and ran into him at the hardware store in Newport News and we talked and laughed for a long while,I remember him and Kevin teaching me to ride my bike at R.O. Nelson,I remember he taught me to tie my shoes at summer recreation, He also gave me my first ride on a mini bike when I was 10.He taught me how to build a briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine,I remember he walked me home from Denbigh boat docks because I was scared to walk in the dark.Once again I have not seen Steve in many years,But I remember you.
