Susanna HOPSON Obituary

YORKTOWN - Our beloved Susanna passed away quietly on Nov. 17, 2010, at her home in Yorktown just one month before her 97th birthday.
Susanna was born on Dec. 23, 1913, in Yorktown less than a few miles from where she was married and lived with her late husband Floyd. She raised her three children during the Great Depression and her skills in sewing, canning, gardening and quilt making were perfected. She was cherished by those who were the lucky recipients of her dinner rolls and Holiday applesauce cake. Susanna served as a Deaconess at Cary's Baptist Church for decades, and upon her death was that congregation's oldest member.
Susanna is survived by her daughter, Audrey Hopson; her daughter-in-law, Jean Hopson; her granddaughters, Donna and Carol Hopson; her great-granddaughters, Olivia and Susanna Becchio; her sister-in-law, Della Russell; her brother-in-law, James Nettles; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband, Floyd; her sons, Lloyd and Pat Hopson; her siblings, Alfred Russell, Willie Russell, Lola Russell, Eva Lou Hopson, Tommy Russell, Henry Russell, Mildred Nettles, Melvin Russell and Genevieve Kirby.
The funeral will be officiated by Bishop Watson at Cary's Baptist Church, 1615 Cary's Chapel Road, Yorktown, VA 23693, on Monday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. Visitation of family and friends will be held on Sunday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 6 p.m. at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home at 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601.
Donations in memory of Susanna can be made to Cary's Baptist Church. The members of this church and community have nurtured and supported Susanna for many years, and the family is grateful for their exceptional acts of kindness.
