Theodore MASTERS Obituary
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole L. Masters and was the son of the late Theodore E. Masters Sr. and Margaret Olsen Masters.
Mr. Masters is survived by his daughter, Julie Gavin; son, Scott Masters; and grandchildren, Shaun and River Gavin, and Amber and Austin Masters; brother, William Masters and wife, Elaine; and special friends, Marian and Jim Morgan.
Teddy graduated from Newport News High School in 1951, where he excelled in sports. He was drafted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a Sargent. He was a graduate of the University of Richmond. While there he excelled in track, held many records and named "Athlete of the Year" in 1958. He also held degrees from William and Mary, North Carolina State University and Old Dominion University.
He began his work for the City of Portsmouth in the School System, then went on to be city clerk and retired after 34 years as Grants Coordinator. He also enjoyed working with the merchants during the revitalization of Olde Towne.
He was president of the Board of Directors of many organizations; Maryview Hospital, Salvation Army, Miss Portsmouth Pageant, Seawall Festival, Portsmouth Sports Club, Portsmouth Host Lions Club and the University of Richmond Alumni Association. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and past Exalted Ruler.
Teddy loved his family and friends and was enjoying his 16 years of retirement. He also loved spending time with his friends at the Catholic Club.
A special thank you to his neighbors in Edgewood Park. He especially enjoyed hanging out with his friends at Bobby and Sonny's houses. He will truly be missed by everyone that knew him and loved him.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at Snellings Funeral Home Churchland Chapel with Assistant Pastor John Lewis officiating. The burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

It was dedicated teaching and coaching professionals like Ted Masters who made the generation of boomers what we all became. So much of that has been lost and now another pillar of that bygone era has fallen. He was a gentleman, scholar and athlete... and shared everything he had with everyone. Thanks coach for all you did and all you were. Great sorrow.

Ted, was a steadfast friend for more than forty years. He accomplished much in our community, working behind the scenes in a positive way, and always keeping our end goals in sight. We have lost a community asset, and fine fellow. He will be missed. You have my deepest sympathy.
