Tracey SCHWARZE Obituary

HAMPTON - Dr. Tracey Teets Schwarze, died Aug. 1, 2010.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Tracey Teets Schwarze, 48, Professor of English and Vice Provost of Christopher Newport University, of Hampton, Va., will be held at CNU's Ferguson Center for the Arts at 1 p.m. on Aug. 7, 2010.
Prior to entering academia, Dr. Schwarze worked in public affairs for the Army, Navy, and Air Force, covering assignments in the states and abroad, until academia became her passion.
A native of Norfolk, Tracey graduated from Maury High School. She was an Echols Scholar and a member of the Cavalier Daily staff, and earned her B.A. in English from the University of Virginia. She received her M.A. in English from the University of Dayton, and her Ph.D. in English at the University of California, Riverside. She taught at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the University of Arizona at Phoenix, and Auburn University, before becoming an Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor at CNU.
In a brief 11 years of service to CNU, she had become chair of the English Department, president of the faculty senate, recipient of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award for 2007/08, and one of the most respected voices on the entire faculty. She was a rare and precious currency, a rigorous and provocative teacher, a generous and fair colleague, a determined and focused administrator, who was impressive and awe inspiring.
Everything was an adventure to Tracey. She was an incredibly curious and voracious traveler whose escapades included hiking and Yoga in Costa Rica, diving in Belize, creating cherished memories with her mother in England, France, and New York, and most recently with beloved fiancE, Steve, bison watching in Yosemite.
Tracey is survived by her mother, Encie Rhodes Teets; her fiancE, Stephen P. Coenen; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceding her in death are her father, Kenneth W. Teets; and her infant brother, Jeffery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to CNU Endowment Association. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I couldn't, and still can't, describe what a lovely person Tracey was. If you knew her, you will never forget her.

A true friend in High School, the smart girl who didn't mind helping this "dumb jock" in AP History - I remember you with fondness.

My wife (Elizabeth Armstrong) and I send our sympathies to Tracey's family. We worked with Tracey at the Cavalier Daily in the early 1980s, and she was one of our favorite people there. You could always count on Tracey - she was conscientious, smart and sensitive to others. It is so hard to see someone taken away before their time like this.

To the Teets Family:

I had the opportunity of having Dr. Schwarze in Grad. school at CNU a few years ago. I enjoyed having her. She taught me a lot and for that, I am thankful. Your hearts are heavy now, but God will heal your pain and heart in time. Cherish the memories of Dr. Schwarze and how she touched so many lives. May God continue to hold you in his arms for comfort.

Tracey
What shock - I had no idea you were ill.
It seems like just yesterday that we were at Governor's School together in Fredericksburg - how can 32 years have passed since we went canoeing and stayed up all night talking in Mary Ball Hall? Later, it was such an adventure to drive across the bridge tunnel to visit you in Norfolk! We had a lot of fun together on college breaks and throughout our travels. I will cherish those memories and hold you in my heart forever.

I am so sorry to hear of your passing, Tracey. So many memories are flooding back, summertime badmitten games in my front yard, playing with your chemistry set in your garage, or quietly playing banker while your Dad slept after working the night shift. I know you are now with your Dad, my Dad, and the other Dads on our block. I'll miss you!

You were an incredible teacher and always pushed us to be our best. CNU and the community are losing a wonderful person. Your love for James Joyce (when so many others would groan at his name) always made me smile.
