Ulla KINZIE Obituary

HAMPTON - Ulla K. Kinzie, 81, of Hampton, went home to her heavenly Father on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009. Ulla was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to the late Niels Laursen and Johanne Johansen on Sept. 20, 1928.
After graduating from college, she became a Home Economics teacher and later held a position with the Danish consulate in Reykjavik, Iceland. She moved to the United States in 1955, residing in Troutville, Va., before making her home in Hampton. Ulla confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a longtime member of Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church. Ulla's Christian faith strengthened on her Emmaus walk. A living reflection of God's love, Ulla gave tirelessly of herself as a foster parent and volunteered at many local charities. Her greatest passion was to help the homeless by devoting many hours to Hampton's local homeless shelter, the H.E.L.P. House. She served diligently in her church and community and inspired others to love unselfishly. You could always depend on Ulla's smiling face and servant's heart. A true inspiration to others, Ulla never met a stranger.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother; sister; and son, Erik.
Ulla's legacy continues in her beloved children, Michael Kinzie (Wanda), Thomas Kinzie, Crickett Davie-Brown (Rodney), Theresa Welenteychik (Marc); daughter-in-law, Diane Kinzie; grandchildren, Nick , Daniel, Thomas, Christy, Aaron, Aubrie, Vicki, Michelle, Erik Michael, Noah, and Andrew; great-grandchildren, Camden, Elyse, Kayla, and Callie; brothers, Carlos Laursen and Kurt Laursen; "adopted" children, Barry Surber (Jeanne), and Debbie Allred (Gary). Ulla also leaves many other extended family and friends to cherish her memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the H.E.L.P. House, 317 Rip Rap Road, Hampton, VA 23669.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A celebration of Ulla's life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church.
Arrangements entrusted to R. H. Smith Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Mom,
Growing up, we spent many hours together working in the yard, moving one flower bed or another. Sometimes it seemed that I had to dig one where just the previous year you had me take it out. I look back on those quiet times together and they are some of my most fond memories.
I loved our travels together like our trip to Vegas when you hit it big at the $1 slots! You taught me that is okay to stand up for yourself, but to never look the other way if someone needs help.
As a young person I did not want to be seen with my mother, but as I matured, I came to realize that I wanted to be just like you.
My heart is heavy, but I am comforted knowing that you are with God watching over us.

Dear Mom,

Thank you for the beautiful memories. Your strength and courage remained until the end. I will always remember our quiet talks in the night and our precious last words to each other. Your beautiful smile was our last look to one another and it is my constant when my heart is breaking. You are MY Amazing Grace. It's not good bye...just see you later. Thank you for blessing me and allowing me to care for you right up until the end.I miss you already.

Mike, Thomas, Cricket and Pixie,

I cannot express in words how sorry I am for your loss. Your mother was truly a saint. Erik was my best friend growing up, and she was like a second mother to me. Her work ethic and kindness were inspirational, and she was a blessing to many on this earth.

MOTHERS

Who is the person who teaches me about loving and caring? ...My mother

Who is the person who remains my most loyal admirer? ...My mother

Who is the person who stays my best friend no matter what? ...My mother

Who shows me how to be the best person I can be? ...My mother

Who is the one who stands behind me and points me in the right direction? ...My mother

Who is the person who loves me unconditionally? ...My mother

Who is it that gave me the greatest and most precious gift I could ever receive? ...GOD
...because he gave me my mother!

Mothers play a very special part in our lives. We should cherish every second we can share with them and never take one moment for granted. Love continuously and without end.
I am so grateful for my last words to be I LOVE YOU to Mama Kinzie and give her a loving hug. Those extend and apply to all of you in the family and know that I am always here, when you need me, and even when you don't.
All my love,

Kimberly (Martin) Fuqua

Ms. Kinzie was always a joy to see and talk to. As a little girl I constantly saw her smiling and working hard in her yard. She always had the most beautiful landscaping and would allow me to pick a flower or two to take home to my mom! Today is a sad day, a wonderful woman has left our neighborhood but not our hearts!

Mike,Tommy,Cricket,Pixie and your families.
I dont have to tell you how great of a person Ulla was you guys were lucky enough to be blessed each day with her, so no one knows better than you. She will always live on in our memories, some when I think of I just smile to myself, like her little bitty self in granddaddys big rubber boots tending to the animals and garden. What she lacked in size she certainly made up with her heart and determination which she used in everything she did. My heartfelt condolences to each one of you today and in the future days as you learn to adapt to life without your rock. All of you are in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless you always. Love Tammy and family.

To the Kinzie Family,
I am so sorry of the news. Mrs. Kinzie was a wonderful woman. I cherish many wonderful memories, not only as my next door neighbor growing up, my sister's mother in law, but being there when my own life events took place. She was always a part of my family and I will miss her greatly. I am so thankful I was able to talk and kiss her one last time and to tell her how much I loved her. Please know I will always be here for the Kinzie family and my thoughts and prayers are with you all. One thing that brings me peace is knowing she is with my Mom and together they are watching over us, like before.
