William AUER Obituary

HAMPTON - William Charles Auer, 89, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010.
Bill was born on June 4, 1920, in Port Carbon, Pa. After his graduation from Port Carbon High School he enlisted in the Army Air Corp., and survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Upon his return from the war, he met, fell in love and married the girl next door, Mary Webber. They were together for 63 years until her passing on May 6, 2008.
Bill retired in 1966 from Langley AFB after 20 years with the USAF. He then managed the print shop at ODU until his second retirement.
He is noted for his creative and artistic abilities in drawing, painting, photography, wood carving, ceramics, furniture building and almost any form of arts and crafts. His creative talents were of good use when he was a member of the 18th century recreation group, The Culpeper Minutemen Battalion during the 1970's and 80's.
Bill is survived by daughter, Patty Auer of Mechanicsville, Va.; son, William C. Auer Jr., of Newport News, Va.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Reformation Lutheran Church, 13100 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, Va.
Memorial contributions may be made to The American Red Cross.
