William HARAWAY Obituary

HAMPTON - William Moffett Haraway Jr., 84, passed away on Sept. 10, 2010.
Mr. Haraway was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Suffolk Va. After graduating high school, he served 30 months in the United Sates Marine Corp. William was owner of Modern Marine Company on Kecoughtan Road, Hampton. William attended the apprentice program at NASA Langley Research Center. After completing the apprentice program, William became a branch head in the fabrications department. Among his many achievements, while at NASA, William earned three U.S. patents; in 1971 for thermal protection ablation spray system; in 1975 for bonding method of continuous regression rate sensor device; and in 1976 for vacuum pressure molding technique.
William retired in 1982 after 30 years of service with NASA, after which, in 1995 earned a patent for aerodynamically responsive vehicular safety system. William enjoyed boating, fishing, restoring automobiles and painting. He loved all of his family and his animals. He was a friend to all and will be missed greatly.
He is survived by children, Susan Liufau, Dr. William Haraway III, Stephen Haraway, and Sheryl Carter; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Grandpa: As I told you many times, how much I appreciated your help, dedication, friendship, and support of the Phoebus High school Softball program.
From building L Screens, thunder sticks,and many other projects, IE ($contributions$) New field design, and coaching tips. I wish I had stayed in touch after I moved to Middlesex. my thoughts and prayers are with your family.
