William Wiatt Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - William "Billy" Wiatt, 60, won't be at Pop's today. Billy died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Newport News, he had been a lifelong Peninsula resident. He served his country for three years in the Marine Corps. He graduated from Gupton-Jones Mortuary School in Atlanta and worked for Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home for nine years. He retired from Amoco Oil Refinery, as an Asset Coordinator, after 25 years. Billy was never one to sit still. He went back to work as the manager of Riverside Funeral Home and eventually opened Pop's Tobacco & Coffee Shop in Kiln Creek. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Monitor No. 197; a member of New Hope Community Fellowship Church; and a longtime treasurer and chairman of the church building fund.
Billy is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sheryl Wiatt; his son, Robert "Bobby" Wiatt of Newport News; his daughters, Dana Sperlein of Deltaville and Christy Wiatt of Portland, Ore.; his brothers, Jimmy Wiatt and his wife, Ginny of Burlington, Ontario, and Danny Wiatt of Kansas City, Mo.; and one grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Hope Community Fellowship Church, c/o David Markowski, 103 Kincaid Lane, Hampton, VA 23666.

I will miss Billy at Pop's, but I am so glad I knew him and talked to him about so many things. Billy held for me the definition of character and integrity. I really think that those we hold in our hearts and thoughts will never die. God Bless

Sorry to hear of the loss of a great Marine and human being, you will be missed Billy. Our family had hopes and prayers that you had gotten past the tough part of the cancer and had won over it, but God had other plans. Now you are with our Father and looking down upon us all. Ride on and smoke a stogie with my father-in-law (another Marine) up there for me. I'll join you some day. To Sheryl, Bobby and the rest of your family our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of grief. We know that you dearly miss your husband, father, son, friend.

To have had Billy as our son-in-law and husband of our daughter, Sheryl, has been a good thing. Sometimes I could whack him (in fun) and other times love him much. I miss you Billy!

Though Billy was not a realative, he was a great influence in my life over the past few years and an incredible support structure as I move through my own health complications... There was noone better that I know to sit beside the Father.. and the last thing he said to me was he would be waiting on the porch with a "Z" in his hand for me...My favorite cigar.. God bless you Billy!
Sheryl and family, if you need, you have but to ask.

In all of our lives, we happen on people who are destined to have a profound impact on us. The number of those people, we can usually count on one hand. For Debbie and myself, Billy Wiatt was one of those people. we will miss his strong, positive and "no worry" manner. We could all take lessons on life from Billy; I did, and am far richer for the experience.
Sheryl, Bobby, Christy, and Dana, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers and that he will always be with you.
