My dear Leander, I recognized your picture in the newspaper before I read your name. You were in my 4th grade class at Aberdeen Elementary School. You, I remember very well. You lived with joy and enthusiasm. I can still hear you singing: Hand me down; Hand me down my walking cane. Mrs. Wilson was our room mother, and she brought us a Christmas tree for our classroom. I can still see(vividly) your hands as you used pliers to tighten the screws in its stand. If personality could be measured in square inches, you had more per square inch than anyone I can think of. You have no idea how many times over the years I have thought of you. You have been a gift to me (and to many others I should imagine), and I am grateful to have had you in my life. You and all my students have been in my daily prayers for half a century. May your soul and the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God, rest in peace. I did not know Fred, however he was a close friend to my brother (Tony) and my family has loss family members over the years, so I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile anyone from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to everyone the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the many people's lives he touched. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave everyone only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be for the time you spent with him.
