Doris Comer Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Doris Clatterbuck Comer, darling wife, and affectionate mother and grandmother, left us to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 15, 2017. She was born in Luray, Va., on March 7, 1937. She was the daughter of the late Eula Eppard and William M. Clatterbuck Sr.. She graduated from Stanley High School in '57 where she loved playing basketball. She married the man of her dreams, Douglas Ralph Comer Sr. and lived most of her married life in Newport News, Va.. She has been an active member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church for 42 years, where she taught Sunday school for 23 years. She was also a member of the Dana Tyson Circle and served on the Menchville House board of directors. Her great love was tending to the church flower gardens. She also loved spending time with her family, traveling, camping, dancing and shopping for her colorful wardrobe. She is survived by her husband of 59 years; daughter Caren C. Cereghino, husband Albert, of Lynchburg; and sons Douglas Comer Jr., wife Cheryl; and Ricky Comer, wife Lori; both sons from Yorktown. She is also survived by her six grandchildren Caitlin, Kamryn, Brendan, Chelsea, Dylan and Conrad. Welcoming her into heaven are her parents and siblings Dale C. Zirkle, William Clatterbuck Jr., Max Allen Clatterbuck, Ann C. Comer and Joyce C. Zigler. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 21 at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Bert Cloud. Memorial contributions are preferred in lieu of flowers, to be made to the Steeple Fund at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church, 38 Hoopes Rd., Newport News, 23602. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family.
