Herbert Funsten Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Dr. Herbert Oliver Funsten of Williamsburg, Va., died Nov. 21, 2007, at the age of 77.
Born in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Landon Randolph Funsten and the late Mary Stuart Teusler Funsten; grandson of Oliver Herbert Funsten and Bessie Carter Minor Funsten and of Dr. Rudolph Bolling Teusler and Mary Woodward Teusler.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Edythe Reed Funsten; two sons, Landon Randolph Funsten II and his wife, Martha Brown Funsten, of Raleigh, N.C., and Herbert Oliver Funsten III and his wife, Ann White Funsten, of Los Alamos, N.M. Six grandchildren survive: Landon Randolph Funsten III, Melissa Hammond Funsten, Jennifer Reed Funsten, Herbert Oliver Funsten IV, Emily Kathryn Funsten, and Kristin Reed Funsten.
A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Funsten was graduated from St. Christopher's School in Richmond, attended Washington and Lee University, and received his Bachelor's degree and Doctorate degree in physics from the University of Virginia. His three years of post-doctoral study were spent at Princeton University.
Dr. Funsten served in the United States Army Chemical Corps for two years, participating in the nuclear weapons tests Operation Plumbbob in Nevada and Operation Redwing on Eniwetok Atoll. He was a lifelong modern jazz pianist who played for many years with the Williamsburg Jazz Ensemble, a voracious reader, and an erudite, stimulating debater.
For 39 years he served as Professor of Physics at the College of William and Mary. His experimental work in nuclear physics was primarily performed at the Jefferson National Laboratory and its predecessors VARC and CEBAF in Newport News.
Dr. Funsten served on the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board, the Virginia Coal and Energy Commission, the board of the Science Museum of Virginia, the Williamsburg Planning Commission, and the founding board of Old Colony Bank. Memberships on school boards were Jamestown Academy and Hampton Roads Academy.
Private burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, and a memorial service will be held at St. James's Episcopal Church in Richmond on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, St. James's Episcopal Church in Richmond, or a favorite charity.

I knew Herb during my early days in Richmond, at St. Christophers. He was one of the "heroes" that I, as a younger boy, looked up to. He encouraged me as an aspiring ham radio operator, gave me some equipment, and was partly responsible for my later choice of engineering as a career. I'm sorry I lost track of him in later life, even though it turned out that we were both living in the town of Williamsburg.

It was with great sorrow and sadness I heard about the passing of Herb. He was a great man with a great heart and knowledge. As my PhD advisor he also exhibited great patience and kindness towards me, for which I will always be indebted and eternally grateful. A light has gone out in the world but, it will still shine through, from those of us who have had the experience and pleasure of interacting with Herb. My sincerest and deepest sympathies go out to his family.

It is with deep sadness that I read of the death of my favorite college professor. I was fortunate to have taken two classes with Dr. Funsten and they affected me immensely. His love of the hidden processes underlying natural phenomena was infectious. Thirty years later, I still delight in reading lay literature about subatomic physics! More important in my memory is the gracious hospitality I received in the Funsten household on those occasions when I was invited to spend an evening there. My sympathies to the family.

Herbert was truly a gentleman, in the finest sense of the word. Gentle, compassionate, self-effacing, gracious and full of the joy of life and boundless optimism.
An inspiration as a musician and a scientist, who always expressed the outmost of curiosity and delight about the universe around him. He will be deeply missed.

Herb was my first friend in Williamsburg and he instantly became, for all time, my hero. His natural kindness and generosity; his immense wit, his limitless curiosity about our world, and the indefatigable enthusiasm and love he expressed for music, for art, for science, for his beautiful wife, and for his many, many friends will stay with me always.
