Not sure what to say?

I knew Herb during my early days in Richmond, at St. Christophers. He was one of the "heroes" that I, as a younger boy, looked up to. He encouraged me as an aspiring ham radio operator, gave me some equipment, and was partly responsible for my later choice of engineering as a career. I'm sorry I lost track of him in later life, even though it turned out that we were both living in the town of Williamsburg.

Herbert is an instructor full of energy and enthusiasm, he always gets things done on time and in the right way, and he always makes people around him relaxed and comfortable.

My grandfather, Herbert, was a very loved man. He meant a lot to other people. I have many memorable thoughts and stories about him. He was a great person, father, and grandfather.

From the day I first met Herb at the SREL laboratory in 1966, he has been a wonderful friend, always kind and always willing to help me and others in any way. He was a stimulating colleague and I miss his support and enthusiasm.

It was with great sorrow and sadness I heard about the passing of Herb. He was a great man with a great heart and knowledge. As my PhD advisor he also exhibited great patience and kindness towards me, for which I will always be indebted and eternally grateful. A light has gone out in the world but, it will still shine through, from those of us who have had the experience and pleasure of interacting with Herb. My sincerest and deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Herb was a friend and a respected mentor. My deepest condolences to his family.

Herbert was always a pleasure to work with. I will miss seeing him around the office.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Funsten family as they mourn the loss of their husband, father, and grandfather. May your faith and memories comfort you in the days ahead.

It is with deep sadness that I read of the death of my favorite college professor. I was fortunate to have taken two classes with Dr. Funsten and they affected me immensely. His love of the hidden processes underlying natural phenomena was infectious. Thirty years later, I still delight in reading lay literature about subatomic physics! More important in my memory is the gracious hospitality I received in the Funsten household on those occasions when I was invited to spend an evening...
