After the war, he worked a short time for Rochester Ropes before joining the Virginia Department of Highways, where he worked for 34 years, upon retiring on October 1, 1977.
At an early age, he joined the Ebenezer Methodist Church in Clarkson, Virginia. On August 26, 1950, he was married to Susan Rebecca Ford Utz of Madison County in Brandy Station, Virginia, by Elder Ashbury H. McNeer of the Methodist church.
