Anne Rafferty Barnes

Anne Rafferty Barnes died peacefully Thursday, June 10, 2010 at her home in Keswick.

She was born September 16, 1920, in Charlottesville, the daughter of the late Charlotte Nelson and Gilbert Thomas Rafferty.

She graduated from St. Anne's School, Charlottesville, in 1938. After working at Jefferson National Bank, Anne married Silas Wright Barnes in 1947.

She was an active member of both St. Paul's Church, Ivy, and Grace Episcopal Church, Cismont, and their altar guilds, The University League, The Monticello Association, and Keswick Hunt Club. For numerous years she was a board member of Bloomfield School (now the Bloomfield Foundation) which cares for physically disabled children and young adults.

As a member of The Charlottesville Garden Club for over 50 years, she pursued a lifelong interest in gardening and horticulture. Her love of Albemarle County and its history, its houses and rolling landscapes were defining characteristics.

Anne is survived by her daughters, Sara Lee Barnes and Charlotte B. Dammann and her husband, Ralph K., their son, Christopher R. Dammann; additional grandchildren, Claudia B. Hildebrand, Ella Ann B. Smith, Elizabeth B. Grinnell, and John H. Barnes; daughter-in-law, Ann S. Barnes; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Silas Wright Barnes; her parents, her sisters, Caroline R. Hall, Frances D. Rafferty and Doris R. Coles; and her stepsons, John Bruce Barnes and Silas Wright Barnes Jr.

A service to celebrate Anne's life will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at Grace Church. Officiants will be the Reverend Julie Norton and the Reverend H. Miller Hunter Jr. Grace Church is located at 5607 Gordonsville Road, (VSH 231), Cismont, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bloomfield Foundation, 4406 Winchester Road, Marshall, VA 20115 or Grace Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 43, Keswick, VA 22947.
