Benjamin Hair Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Dec. 15 to Dec. 20, 2009.
Benjamin Gordon Hair of Stony Point, the only son of Brenda and Gordon Hair, perished tragically in a traffic accident Sunday, December 13, 2009.

He was born in Olney, Maryland, on December 27, 1988, and moved to Frederick, Maryland, a year later. Ben attended schools there until the family came home to Albemarle County in 2001. He graduated from Sutherland Middle School and Albemarle High School with honors, and would have graduated with his class at Virginia Tech in May 2010. He was presently enrolled in the Pharmacy School at Shenandoah University planning to become a pharmacist like his dad.

Ben was a swimmer since the age of 18 months, competing in YMCA meets in Maryland and later for the Virginia Gators, YMCA, SWAT, and Albemarle High School, where he also ran track and field and played lacrosse. In June 2006, Ben was awarded the first ever Skip Kinnier Scholarship to a swimmer by the Falcon Club. Ben said that he was really amazed that he was chosen for the scholarship and that it was probably one of the greatest honors in his life so far. He was an accredited Life Guard, working mostly at the Meade Avenue pool and the University of Virginia Aquatics and Fitness Center. He also was a pharmacy technician, working for CVS at the Downtown Mall store as well as in Blacksburg, Louisa, and Winchester, whenever he could take time from his studies in order to earn his pocket money and to follow his favorite band 311.

Ben participated in the Boy Scouts of America program from the time he was a Tiger Scout until he became an Eagle Scout in January 2006. In an interview, Ben said he wanted to become a scout because his dad had been one and then he wanted to go all the way to be an Eagle Scout and make his parents proud.

His proposal was to enhance the area behind Albemarle High School with 100 American Chestnuts and 50 White Oaks. Ben's parents and fellow scouts offered their support and hard work in building three benches, rebuilding the bridge behind AHS, and clearing all the brush and obstruction from the walking trail. Ben wanted the benches to be sturdy and made to last for a long time so that people would remember how he had helped AHS and they would have a nice place to sit if they were tired from walking.
Ben was pre-deceased by his paternal grandparents, Merle and Mary Hair of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and his maternal grandfather, George M. Graves, who died in April.

He is survived by his loving parents, Brenda and Gordon Hair; his maternal grandmother, Joan Graves; his aunt, Thais Hair of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; his aunts, Donna Fredrick and Stacey Liljegren of Charlottesville; his aunt, Valerie Roadman and her husband, Stanley Bjorum, of Portland, Oregon; his cousin, John T. Liljegren, who was more like a brother, and John's fiancée, Jasveen Kaur, of Falls Church, Virginia; and his great-uncle, Julian R. Graves of Charlottesville.
Ben will be missed by his extended family, myriad friends and co-workers. He will continue to serve his community by his expressed wish to be an organ donor where at least 100 patients will benefit from his gift. A scholarship to honor the memory of Benjamin Gordon Hair will be established at Albemarle High School, 2775 Hydraulic Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

In lieu of flowers, please send your contributions there.

A memorial service for our beloved Benjamin will be held 1 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2009, at First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville, Virginia, in the care of the Reverend Mark Long, with a reception afterwards at the church. A private interment will take place Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at Monticello Memorial Gardens.

Benjamin, we love you and will always miss you.

Legacy.com reminded me about Ben today in an email... as if I had forgotten.
I wish that I'd known you longer and that I had been able to see you grow as a pharmacist.
But, God had other plans.
I'm sure you are still watching over your family and friends. And, they'll miss you always.

Beloved Hairs, you are one of my fondest families of Charlottesville and I apologize it's been a while since we last spoke. I am saddened by your loss and adored Ben; he was an exceptional individual of whom I had the pleasure to know. His wit was incredible and I much appreciated his individuality...he was one of the few former students I befriended on Facebook as I enjoyed seeing his academic and personal successes. Much love and you're absolutely in my thoughts.

Dear Brenda and Gordon,

How sad to catch up with old friends due to a tragedy. It is nice to know that the intelligent, gangly, fast swimming, right arm winging boy with a glint of mischievous in his eyes; turned out to be a remarkable young man. How proud he must have made both of you and the rest of us who knew him for only a brief moment. Please know that my (our) thoughts and prayers are with you both and the rest of your family.

With much sympathy,

While I did not have the opportunity to get to know Ben well, what little time I did have he really impressed me. He had a great personality and I will always remember his huge smile. Please know that my heart hurts for the loss of Ben and I grieve with you & your family. He will be missed so very much at our store 5750 in Winchester. I hope it brings you some comfort to know how many lifes he affected in such a positive way and that he will never be forgotten.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Hair,

I do not know you nor did I know your son, but he seems to have been such a wonderful person, a real humanitarian. So tragic that he's leaving us at such a young age. I'm sure he would have had so much more to offer the community and the world.
May you both and your family be blessed
with many blessings as the prayers are offered up for you. May you eventually have peace and comfort in your memories of your active, kind and thoughtful son.

God bless, I wish you well.

From one who grew up in and has very pleasant memories of Stony Point.

I did not know Ben, but I used to coach for the Elks and know some of those who were in his life. I lost my twenty-year old sister a year ago Thanksgiving day to a car accident, and not a day goes by that I do not think of her, miss her, or grieve her death. I know words cannot make you feel better, but please know that the support of family and friends, and God, will get you through this awful time. There were so many times that I questioned, and still question, why such a young person with so much promise was taken, but I remind myself to trust in God's plan and that she is in a better place. Words cannot express how sorry I am to hear of your loss. Compassionate friends is a support group in the Charlottesville area that has really helped my parents. It may help your family as well.

December 18, 2009

I did not know Ben. However, learning of his death and later learning a little about his life--I more fully comprehend the depth of your grief. It seems he was a great young man who had a positive impact on many people. My prayers are with your family.

Dear Brenda and Gordon,
I want to offer my deepest sympathy to you in this time of grief. I will not forget how Ben brightened our days at some of those long swim meets. I regret that I have a conflict and will not be able to attend the service. My prayers will be with you as you reflect on the blessing that Ben was to his family, friends, and community during his brief time among us.

Words cannot express how deeply sorrow I am for your loss. I did not know Ben personally, but I worked with Gordon and felt I got to know Ben thru Gordon. If Ben was anything like his father, I know that you raised a wonderful son who the world will truly miss.

May you be comforted by our Heavenly Father. Know that you will see Ben again.

Brenda, Gordon, Joan, Donna, Stacey & Valerie,

I was in shock and very saddened when Sarah called to share the tragic news. My heart goes out to you all.

He was such a bright and handsome young man with an amazing future in front of him. He touched so many lives and he will live on in many hearts and memories.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Brenda & Gordon, I would like to express my deepest sympathies and to let you know my prayers are with you. Ben was such a wonderful young man and had a good heart like his parents. I will remember when he taught my kids to swim and him bringing over fruit I had purchased one year when I was sick. When he walked in my daughter who was around 3 at that time smiled from ear to ear. Ben laughed and I said " Ben I think she has a crush on you". Remember his smile because that's what we will remember about him.

Brenda and Gordan,
My deepest sympathies for you and your family. Ben will be deeply missed by all who knew him and those that worked with him. I dare say OFAC will not be the same without him. His smiling face and silly antics, like dressing up in the lost and found always made the tough days better. He was an excellent guard and friend to those who worked with him.
Kendal and Devin would like you to know that they never had a better playmate at the pool than Ben.
Draw your strength from the Lord and let him carry you through this tragic time.

With Love,
Donna Swingler~~Esmont, Va.

Gordon and Brenda,

I don't know whether you remember me, but I was your realtor when you purchased in Frederick, Md and Ben was just a little one. I am so saddened to have learned of this tragic, tragic event. My friend, Curt Younkins, shared this with our choir tonight. Having read the obituary, you raised quite a wonderful young man who wanted to be like his Dad. That's a wonderful testimony to your parenting.

Please know that many people are grieving with you.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

We know God must have a better plan for Ben but it is so hard to see in the midst of the horrible pain of his loss. Please know our prayers are for all of the family and friends who loved Ben.
