David Bailey Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Oct. 3 to Oct. 17, 2010.
David M. Bailey

David Mark Bailey, 44, of Earlysville, died of brain cancer on Saturday, October 2, 2010, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and was welcomed into everlasting life at his place at the Table with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

David was born February 26, 1966, the son of Kenneth and Ethel Bailey, missionaries to the Middle East. For the first 22 years of his life, his home was Beirut, Lebanon, including the first 10 years of the Lebanese civil war. Because of war, the family was obliged to evacuate first to Switzerland in 1967, and later to Cyprus in 1982. David's two final years of high school were completed in a private school in Germany because he was, as a young man, especially vulnerable on the streets of Beirut.

David attended Grove City College in western Pennsylvania, where he met and married his soul mate, Leslie McGarvey, of Emlenton, Pennsylvania. During his college years, he was active as a performing songwriter, playing evening and weekend gigs with a music partner. He also enjoyed choir, frat life, acting, and organizing an underground newspaper. David graduated with majors in English and Communication Arts. In the late 1980's, David and Leslie relocated to the Washington, D.C., area where David worked for the United States government in satellite imagery analysis. His career evolved to training and then program management with numerous software subcontractors, ending with employment with Eastman Software in Massachusetts.

Their daughter, Kelcey, was born in 1992, and son, Cameron, in 1994.

The day prior to moving to the Boston area, in July of 1996, David was diagnosed with brain cancer - Glioblastoma Multiforme IV (GBM). He was expected to have fewer than two years to live. Eager to have his life make a difference in the lives of others, he gave up his career in the software industry and, with a great leap of faith, launched a third career as a performing songwriter - a "troubadour of hope." Following two surgeries, radiation, experimental chemotherapy and nuclear therapy, David criss-crossed America (and Europe) singing in coffee houses and churches, for cancer conferences and cancer survivor groups for 12 years. David wrote all of his own songs, which grew out of his experiences of war and of battling a deadly cancer. He sang of faith, hope, love, and of living life to it's fullest each day. He experienced a recurrence of brain cancer in late 2008, recovering enough to tour in 2009 and early 2010. Enduring numerous additional surgeries and difficult treatments, David made a final tour in July of this year.

David is survived by Leslie, his wife of 23 years; his children, Kelcey and Cameron; his parents, Kenneth and Ethel Bailey; a sister, Sara Makari and her husband, Victor; numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law and eight nieces and nephews.

To quote a line from one of David's songs, "The tears of the angels form a river where you can wash your pain, and even in the middle of the thunder, don't forget the love inside the rain." His theme was "There may be years of tears behind you, but right now you've got One More Day." He leaves behind him a musical legacy of 23 professionally-recorded CDs. His music and his personal testimony have affected the lives of countless thousands in this country and around the world.

The family offers deep gratitude to Doctor Henry Friedman, Doctor Allan Friedman and Doctor David Reardon at Duke and Doctor David Schiff at University of Virginia Medical Center and their caring staffs. We also offer loving thanks to our family of caregivers at the Hospice House and Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville.

Memorial gifts are welcome and may be made to Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church, 6566 Spring Hill Road, Ruckersville, VA 22968. Half of those gifts will be equally divided between the following brain tumor organizations, The American Brain Tumor Association, the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Gray Matters Foundation, the Florida Brain Tumor Association and T.H.E. Brain Trust.

David was a charter member and Elder at Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ruckersville, Virginia, where he co-chaired the Evangelism Committee. Baptized into the Covenant, he was a lifelong Christian and we will have a Celebration of his life and of the Resurrection at a Memorial Service 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at Meadows Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. His daughter suggests an attire of tie-dye, if you like. David would be wearing jeans and ask you to check out his website, www.davidmbailey.com.

I am grateful to David that his presence through his music softened and gave hope through the hardest emotion in my life. My husband received a health diagnosis in 2005 of lymphoma. Every six months for four years he was evaluated. His doctor gave him good news that he was cancer free. Not long after he was feeling different when out in the work field. Within two months he was diagnosed with GBM. I reached out to support groups online connecting with survivors of GBM. Among other support groups The Gray Brain Matters Foundation survivors responded. That was our connection to David M. Bailey. My husband, Jerry in the mean time had the scan, brain surgery and later one chemo session. I wanted to know what I can do to cure my husband. In the mailbox I received a music CD in the mail signed by David M. Bailey via Lanette of The Gray Brain Matters Foundation. The turtle with the phrase "Brain Tumors Stink" is so true. Hanging onto Faith*Hope*Love.. praying constant to God and His Angels for my husband. David M. Bailey's life as I heard his words in his music reflected richly so much. My heart cannot put into words how thankful I am to David M. Bailey for reaching out our family and others through his heart and soul in his music. God bless David's family and bless David in Heaven. On my husband, Jerry's marker reads.. God's the Boss Faith*Hope*Love. My husband passed within two months of his GBM.

When I was first diagnosed with cancer our family didn’t know how to react. My doctors recommended that we go see a wonderful singer named David M Bailey. Not only did we see David at the hospital but we saw him various times throughout the years and brought many friends along the way. David took the time to help us understand how to treat cancer as a chronic Illness to “keep on keeping on”. Not a day goes by that we don’t play his music will pray for David and his family.

I first heard David speak and sing about living with brain cancer at the SNO meeting in Charlottesville. As a neurooncologist I was in awe of his courage to not only fight the disease but bring it out in the open and raise awareness and give hope. Later on we were fortunate to have him as our guest in Hartford, CT at the Fred Cohen Symposium "Living with a brain tumor" where he brought his message of hope, love and courage. He died one year later and at the following year's symposium I played his song"Love the time" asa a celebration of David's life and the lives of our patients who fight the same fight. David's message lives on. May his memory always be a blessing

I grew up in the church but it wasn't until I attended NWMC for the first time in 2000 that I truly accepted Christ into my heart during David's concert. I was 19 years old. I purchased many of his CD's and listened to them all the time. When my mother was hospitalized in 2005 with inoperable brain cancer, we listened to David's music in her room. She lost her battle with cancer in April of 2006. I returned to NWMC in 2008 as the Youth Director of a small church near Omaha, Nebraska and was able to not only express my gratitude to David personally, but was also anointed with oil by him. David was used by God to draw me into ministry and I try every day to live up to the standard that has been set. I am so thankful that David was in my life and was saddened when he left us here on earth, but I can't even begin to think about the awesome performances he is putting on in heaven (not to mention how good the coffee must be there!).
David, you hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for all that you have done in my life. Until we meet again…

I was just playing some of David's songs and looked him up on Facebook. I am so sorry to see that he passed away in 2010. My husband of 24 years passed away in 2002 of a GBM and we saw David perform at MD Anderson. My husband, Chuck, enjoyed meeting David and loved his songs. He looked to him as his inspiration, but his "One More Day" ended on September 7, 2002. I will always be grateful to David and the hope he gave us. RIP David.

I just ran across a song that I had printed out that was one of David's..."When" the song was used in my own husband's funeral...I wanted the people who attended to be able to read along. My husband passed away of GBM on Nov. 10, 2006 (only after 7mos from his first surgery)...I was at a Neuro-Circle meeting in Houston, TX(for patients and care-givers) I got to hear David play and speak...I bought two CD's...I cherish them! Thank you for your music and the words! you are missed...say hi to Larry!

Put one of his CDs in the car player yesterday as I went out to visit my husband at the Vets Home and he spoke to me again as he always has, with that inner smile of warmth and love. It's true he lives within and can touch you where you live.

I had a chance to do a small article on David for the Martin Guitar Sounding Board several years ago when I lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, not far from where David lived. I unfortunately never got to hear him perform in concert, which is my loss. I am amazed by the number of people whose lives he touched over his relatively short lifetime. May David always be remembered in the best possible light, as that is where his memory belongs.

God bless your family forevermore ..
I don't know David personally except through his music. Lanette sent me a CD signed by David "Comfort". My husband passed away March 14, 2010, from the same brain tumor as David. I have purchased all of David's CD's & DVD. I was one who needed these words so elegantly to feed my soul. I pray every day ..Your family is in my prayers daily even though I do not know you ..I just know I miss my husband as your family misses your loved one. Beautiful song on the Faith CD ..song #5 "The Word". Faith-Hope-Love

I have been and continue to be blessed by knowing David. His daily devotion to singing out God's word, the Spirit's presence, in songs changed my life along with many people that I've met. What stays with me in his lyric and melodies is the sense that Grace and Hope are alive and growing in both this day's terrific and tragic, and we're meant to be forever shaped and changed by them.

I've been thinking about David a lot in the last several days...he kept coming into my mind....and now I realize perhaps it is because of this sad anniversary. I will always remember his kindness to me when we were at ACS in Beirut. He was just such a great guy. I am glad that so many people were also touched by that amazing good spirit of his.

I have had your cd for 3 years now and could only find the time to listen to it today- though I wish that I had listened to it a long time ago. I watched my husband battle a GBM, and lose his life to it at age 40. Today, 16 months after his death I finally had a moment to listen to your songs- which I have been wanting to do for all this time. You were an amazing man that has shared a gift with me today- even after your own passing- your music lives on and keeps giving hope. I will listen to it many more times, even though your truths make me cry- and inspire me at the same time. I have three children ages 9 and under and I told them of you today- and they will listen with me to your music and learn the important messages that you shared. Thank you.

David, your songs brought tears to my eyes, and also a peace to my heart. I know your fight, as Mom just lost hers (to GBM) not long ago. My heart went to Heaven with her. She was strong, vibrant, musical and passionate just like you! I know the two of you are leading the chorus and I can't wait to hear your music when I arrive there someday. And to David's soulmate... my tears fall with yours and my laughter echos on the same wind. God be with you until you embrace your beautiful David again! <3

I wrote the following email on 5 Oct 2010, at 08:13:

Dear Leslie, Kelcey and Cameron

In our home, the first one to get up in the morning puts on the drip coffee pot. Our favorite is a natural, full-flavored roast Fair Trade coffee distributed by Oxfam. I was up early today. After putting on the coffee I came downstairs. I could hear a light but very welcome rain pattering on the road and sidewalk. I pulled back the stairway curtain to have a look... and remind myself to take an umbrella when in a little bit I catch the commuter train into Barcelona for a couple of VO recordings.

When I woke up my laptop and the email came in... yours immediately caught my eye! How appropriate to be sent from David's name and address! I learned of David I believe through CDBaby, maybe three or four years ago. I connected immediately with him not only because of his music but also because my childhood heritage is similar to his.

After reading your email I went to his website. So appropriate to read when it first opens:
david m. bailey: Home

Thank you David for fighting the battle long and hard. Thank you for your lyrics and music expressed through these 23 albums. You have encouraged my faith, strengthened my hope, sharpened my vision, and now you are comforting us more than you can imagine! I'm looking forward to that greatest live gig of all you'll be playing!

Dear family, may the Father's love comfort each of you today and in all the days ahead!

My favorite attire is blue-jeans too! And today, with the greatest pride and in loving memory!

¡Un fuerte abrazo! (A big hug!)

So many people touched after you've been gone for almost 2 years....I so miss you. My hurts are so trivial, I wonder how in the world you stayed so focused, so positive....you were and are a gift from God. I too say your name often wondering if you are watching me and my family....wondering if you are close by....live on

My family met David when he came to our little hometown Mayfield Presbyterian Church. We fell in love with him, his music, and most of all, his message. On his second visit, my husband came with us, bought a Love the Time bracelet, and hasn't taken it off since. Our daughter, Anna, was particularly inspired by David. The year David passed away, we chose a coffee cup as our annual Christmas ornament, and put David's name on it. Anna made a paper mosaic of David's image with his guitar and donated it to our church. (When our church was later destroyed by fire and water damage, the piece survived.)
4 months ago, Anna, now 12, was diagnosed with a rare heart disease and we were told she would need to go on the transplant waiting list. Anna has handled the situation with grace and courage and HOPE, all of which she saw in David. Now Joe wears a bracelet for Anna, next to David's. We think of him and his family often, and think that Anna meeting him was somehow part of the divine plan.
Peace and love to the Bailey family from the King family

I first met David at a national PCUSA Transformation Conference. I, and some clergy colleagues invited him to Long Island first for a concert at C W Post LIU. Then he came back to one of our churches for a concert the following year. Then our church invited him, for two years running. He became a real friend and I shared my and my husband's struggle with Parkinson's disease the summer just before David left us for the heavenly kingdom. He inspired and shared his hope when I needed it most. I will play his music and remember him as long as I live. I am so grateful that God and his family shared David with us all.

I met David when he came to our cancer center to share his message. A fellow cancer patient, I learned a very new way to live with my illness and cancer treatment.
moreover, his family has been and continues to be very kind, and keep his music available for all us who find renewed hope and Gods love there...David truly lives forever and continues to inspire me and those Who listen to his music.
honestly, I wouldn't be alive if I hadn't heard him sing that day in 2006 at Lehigh valley Hospital.

We released our 8 year old son back to GOD on January 14, 2002 with the same type of tumor that David suffered from. I found great comfort in David's story and his music. I don't think anyone can ever "understand" this type of heartache unless they have "been there" and, quite honestly, I don't think you understand it after you have been through it. But, David's story and GOD gave me hope when the doctors at Duke couldn't. I never got to meet David on this side of heaven, but I know I will one day when I am with my SAVIOR and son again! THANK YOU FOR SHARING and BEING AN ENCOURAGEMENT to OTHERS WHO ARE HURTING! GOD BLESS! Crystal McCormick

My heart goes out to David's family. His music and message have been a reason to carry on in the most difficult times in my own life. He was a easy person to talk to and he would answer emails. I was so sorry to hear of David's death when I heard about it yesterday (Sept. 13, 2011) from an online guitar friend. I met David when I recruited him for a retreat for cancer patients in Hunt, Texas about 4 years ago. I had been a fan of his for a long time and was so jazzed that he was coming to perform at our retreat in the Hill Country of Texas (God's country). What a great guy. I picked him up at the airport and we got to talk all the hour and a half drive to the retreat and many mini-moments during the retreat. He even gave me his bandana at the end of the retreat and his coffe cup(after I begged). I'm such a dork and he was so gracious and kind. My prayers are with his family and I can't wait to see him when I go to Heaven. I bet he is totally jamming for Jesus, just like he did here in the Shadowlands. God bless you all.

I met David on the internet after my wife, Marj, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1996. David kindly put me in touch with Dr. Henry Firedman at Duke University Medical Center at which time I was able to have Marj accepted into the same research protocol that David was in. What a blessing. Although Marj only survived for two years following her diagnosis those two years were wonderful because of the absence of side-effects which would have accompanied the standard treatment at the time, i.e., BCNU. I tracked David's ministry and have several of his marvelous CDs. It was great getting to know him, even if only from afar, and be inspired by his life. Bet Marj has been able to meet David in person by now. PS, like David, Marj was a devoted Christian. <

I first heard David in Montreat, NC during a Sunday morning service in which his father preached. His music was right on the mark. He also performed that afternoon and I went back. Hearing that he was a "java junkie" made it even better. I was searching on Facebook today to see if he had a page - because I had been listening to his music during lunch - and found that he has passed away in Oct. I know you do not know me, but please accept my condolences. I have listened to his music ever since that summer in Montreat. In fact, my family always asks - "Do you ever listen to anything else?". Besides the "Java Junkie" song, I love -"The First Breakfast", "Anymore", "Angel in the Attic". Again, I am just heartbroken to hear of your loss. His music was just healing for the soul. I cannot even express what it means to me.

During my last year of radiation oncology residency, my wife, my daughter (who was a 1-year old), and I had the pleasure of meeting David at a cancer survivor retreat in Hunt, Texas in May 2007. As a guitar player myself, I loved his music and my favorite album is still "Coffee with the Angels." The sound from his Martin guitar was just spectacular.

It was amazing to hear how he was one of the first GBM patients to get a chemotherapy drug called temozolamide, many years before it became the standard of care. David has demonstrated that GBM does not have to be an immediate death sentence. I often mention his story to my newly diagnosed GBM patients, so they can see what a rich life David lived after chemo and radiation treatments.

I only learned of his death this December, when I went to visit my former training program. Sadly, the director of the cancer retreat informed me that David had passed away. I was always hoping to cross paths with him again, but am thankful that I at least had the opportunity to have coffee with an angel.

Meeting and hearing David over three years ago profoundly shaped my faith and sense of call. The voice of his honest creative self will be sorely missed. His connection with God created openings for others to experience the touch of the sacred in the mess of living. May God's comfort be with you all during this time.

My husband heard of David while researching brain cancer and possible treatment centers because our nephew had been diagnosed with same type of brain cancer. When contacted, David emailed back and told of his doctor and treatment at Duke. He even offered to contact my sister-in-law to tell of his journey with treating the tumor.
Our nephew was seen at Duke, thanks to David sharing his story with us. Our nephew died 2 years ago (he did not chose to receive treatment at Duke due to the distance from his home on the west coast)but we were grateful to have had a link to David M. Bailey because we appreciated his beautiful music. My daughter even named her Relay for Life team "Keep on Walking" after one of David's song titles.. we have one of his CD's and that truly was one of David's greatest gifts.. his music. God bless David's family and thank you for sharing him while he performed.

When my dear brother-in-law was diagnosed with a GBM 6 1/2 years ago we were devastated. We researched treatment options and chose the Brain Tumor Center at Duke University for treatment. After watching the 60 Minutes segment on David I e-mailed him about my brother in law Cam. David wrote back and gave us hope. Cam spent 6 1/2 years traveling to Duke monthly for treatment and we are so greatful for the time we had with him.

I am so very sorry to hear of David's passing but happy that he was given 14 years. Dear Cam passed away Oct. 23, 2010. We are so blessed to have had the time we did with him. We are so greatful for the dedicated Doctors at Duke.

May God bless your family and be at your side during this difficult time.

Feel no guilt in laughter.
He knows how much you cared.
Try to think of happiness,
that all of us have shared.

We shouldn't grieve forever.
He would never want us to.
He'd hope that we can carry on,
the way we used to do.

So talk about the good times,
the ways you showed you cared,
the days you spent together,
and all the love you shared.

And if you keep these memories,
you will never be apart,
and he will live forever
locked safely in your heart.

The angels came for him
much sooner than we'd planned.
So now we pull together
and try to understand.

David M. Bailey and Cameron J. Mitchell were true heros.

I'm so sorry for your lost. Sara if you are reading this, I hope you and your family know how much David represented the word faith. When man says no, God says yes. I am so glad the world got to experience one of God's precious gifts for another twelve years. I do think about you Sara, and I will continue to keep you and your family lifted up in prayer.

All my love, Danielle (Dawson) Webster

I have fond memories of hearing David sing and play music when I was home to go to BRPC with my parents. His words and his spirit lifted and inspired me. He will continue to do that for others even though he is no longer with us. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I'm so sorry to hear this. David was a guest of ours a few years back in Marquette, Michigan, to benefit brain cancer research and advocacy. He sang and played the guitar. To this day, it remains one of the most uplifting events I have ever been a part of. He will be sorely missed. My prayers go to him and his family.

My condolences to david's family and friends. I met david (his spelling)in D.C. at a concert for the National Catholic College Student Association. I was taken by him and invited him to play for us at the Newman Center at Towson University in Maryland. He did that on two separate occasions. I bring words of condolences from all those he touched at Towson. David will never be forgotten by any of us. He gave us hope. He continues to give us hope in the legacy he left for us - his life and his recordings. But the greatest legacy was to have met him. I thank God for sending david into my life. May he now rest in peace. Be concealed in God, dear friend, and keep an eye on us all.
Love,
Father Bob Albright

What a special, inspiring person! Davd inspired me and all the members of our cancer support group at Martha Jefferson Hospital for years. I remember one day finding a 'One More Day" mug and a cd on my porch. I was enthralled and deeply changed. Since then, I have shared his amazing music with many people. He's like that: he makes us want to love and share. One day I had the distinct honor of serving him a cup of (black!) coffee; that is a special memory for me. My thoughts, prayers and good wishes are with his family. His sweet love for them is palpable in his music.

To David's Family and Friends, I am so very sorry for your loss. I remember vividly the first time I ever heard David's music. I was sitting in the student health center on my college campus back in 2000 and One More Day was playing. Once I learned of the artist's name, I looked him up and have been inspired and moved by David's life and music ever since. As I struggled loosing a dear friend to cancer recently, listening to David's words helped me see the hope and gift found in life. He will be missed by thousands upon thousands around the world and he will be missed by me. You and yours will be in my thoughts and prayers for years to come.

As my sister fought her own battle against a brain tumor, David’s story was an inspiration--a beacon of hope. Of particular significance were his comment and subsequent lyrics that reminded us “If ‘there's one chance in 500, someone's gotta be the one.’ Never stop thinking that you're the one.” We held tightly to that possibility for the duration of the battle.
God called my sister (Kristi Dart, “Angel Unaware,” ABTA Garden of Hope) home to be healed on October 16, 2001. I am sure she was among the many to welcome David and I look forward to meeting him when I see her again. While I only knew him through his songs and story, I nevertheless feel the loss…

I never had the pleasure of meeting David but he sounds like a man I would have loved. His obituary has touched me to the point that I needed to add a message.
I want the family and friends of David to know that even after his passing, he is still touching other's hearts. I know he has mine. His "Theme" touched me in a personal way and I have written it down (giving David credit for it), and plan to keep it in a place where I see it daily to remind myself that no matter how unhappy the past may have been, I have one more day to choose to make the most of.
Thank you, David!!!!

I didn't know David but when I read the obituary online I went to his website. What beautiful song I listened too. He is an Angel and it gave me strength since my daughter passed away 2 months ago of terminal cancer and his song gave me such a peace of calm in my heart. I know he will be missed by all but God always has his reasons for taking a love one. Be strong and Bless you all.

To David's family in your time of sorrow.

I never had a chance to meet David, however, my husband Barry, & I talked with David on the telephone several times. You see, Barry was also diagnosed with a GBM in Aug. 2006. We also had the same doctors at Duke that David did. We always tried to keep up with David's website. David's words of inspiration gave my husband the hope he needed to keep on fighting for his life against this deadly disease.

Although my Barry died Sept. 21, 2009 he never gave up the hope of defeating this devastating cancer. David's words meant so much to Barry and truly inspired him to go on fighting.

May all of his family find peace in knowing that David is walking among the angels now. I am sure that my Barry was just one of many to greet your David into the gates of Heaven.
May you find peace and have great strength in the days to come.

In deepest sympathy,
Sincerely,
Mrs. Anne Carnes

Leslie, I want you to know that it was the way that David lived his life and his songs that allowed Marguerite to be at peace with her life and death which, in turn allowed her to help sooo many others. Marguerite being at peace was the greatest gift I ever received and has provided me with such comfort during this first year without her. As so many others have said thank you for sharing david with us and know that I am here if there is any way I can be of help as you begin to ask your own "what now?".

David always had a smile on his face when he'd come into the Earlysville Post office to mail his CDs and he'd always bring me the latest one. I'm glad I was able to attend several of his local concerts. I'll miss him, but what a time he must be having seeing his Lord & Saviour face to face. Darlene ( Earlysville, VA)

Hello Family and Friends of David. I did not know your husband and father. But I frequently read the online obituaries and guestbooks. What a ministry to the heart!! David seemed just like an angel. I went to the website and listened to the beautiful music. It really touched my heart. May God's peace comfort you during this difficult time. It appears that he knew the Lord. Find peace in knowing that he is in Heaven with Christ.

When I lose a friend, and know I will not see them again for a long long time, I feel as if the blue dome surrounding my world has broken and there is a savage tear in that protective bubble. This hole is made by the shooting star of this person's soul, which shows us the way into the universe of God. We are so far down here and they get to travel and see the face of God. I will miss knowing you were in my world, David, and will miss so much the poems and comments that you sent. Prayers to you and for your wonderful family.
