Elder Dorothy Virginia Fitzgerald Clay

Elder Dorothy Virginia Fitzgerald Clay passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at her residence in Charlottesville.

She was born February 16, 1932, in Amelia County, daughter of the late Freeman and Victoria Fitzgerald.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoye J. Clay; her son, Hoye J. Clay Jr.; four brothers, Freeman, Benjamin, Waverly and Robert Lynn; and two sisters, Sarah and Martha.

She graduated from Russell Grove High School in Amelia County and received a cerificate from Theological School at Virginia Union University in Richmond.

She was known as "Dot" by her friends and family and worked in health care for many years and was beloved by all of her patients. One day she went to work not feeling well. At the end of her shift when her co-worker knocked on the door to start her shift, it was opened by the patient with her fingers to her lips saying,"shh, shh, Dorothy is sleeping." The patient had insisted that Dorothy rest in her bed until she felt better.

She leaves to treasure her memory, one devoted son, Wilbur; three grandchildren with one being very devoted, Nicole Woodford and her husband, James; four great-grandchildren; a devoted brother, Ralph Edward Fitzgerald and his wife, Pat, of Rose Hill, Kansas; three devoted sisters, Ollie, M.A. "Doll" and Victoria Fitzgerald, all of Washington D.C.; a host of loving and devoted nieces and nephews, among them devoted, Freda Clay and very devoted, Willie "W.J." Jones; cousins with one being devoted, Sarah Baker; relatives and friends, amoung them, very devoted, Deacon James Bland and very devoted, Annie Berry.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the Manassa Hill Baptist Church, Amelia.

Interment will be at the Church Cemetery.

There are no calling hours scheduled at the Funeral Home.
