Earl Butler Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Dec. 1 to Dec. 3, 2009.
Earl Vivian Butler

Earl Vivian Butler, 91, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2009, at his home in Scottsville, with his daughter by his side.

He was born on February 1, 1918, in Fluvanna County, a son of the late Samuel Vivian and Mattie Perkins (O'Brien) Butler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Frances Farrish Butler; two brothers, Forrest and Sammy Butler; and one sister, Juanita Dansey.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Beverley and Charles Baber; and a brother, Malcolm Butler and his wife, Gertrude, of Scottsville. He will be dearly missed by many people, especially his brother, who lived next door.

Earl was a member of Scottsville United Methodist Church. He was very proud that he served his country for more than four years during World War II. After returning home in 1945, he worked as an automobile mechanic in Scottsville and later in Charlottesville. When he retired, he and his wife enjoyed collecting and refinishing antiques.

No one could have been loved more than Earl was by his wife and daughter. He was a kind, caring, unselfish person who put everyone else's needs above his own. Everyone who met him loved and respected him. He was a true servant of mankind.

There will be no formal visitation night. A viewing will be held from 12 until 5 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville.

The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Scottsville United Methodist Church by the Reverend Jeane Dunkum. Burial will follow at Scottsville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Scottsville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 280, Scottsville, VA 24590.

Being a niece of Gertrude, I often saw your dad when I would go to visit her. Once, I locked my keys in my car and Earl saw me trying to get the door open. Of course, he came over and asked if he could help. He got me a coat hanger and between the two of us we got the door open. It's a time like this that those memories return and you appreciate them so much more.
Thank God for having had such a wonderful earthly father and rest assured that now he's with his heavenly father where he'll live forever blessed! Carolyn Collins

My prayers go out to you. Growing up next door to Earl and Frances I will always remember looking across the field and seeing your Dad in the garden or walking around the field with his stick. Waving when he would see me checking on my mom. My mother will miss such good neighbors

We are so very sorry. Losing a parent is hard, losing them three months apart is extremely hard. We know very well. We lost our parents three months apart and four months apart. Our hearts are heavy with sadness for you. May God hold you close in His Loving Arms and whisper words of comfort in your ears that can only come from Him at this time.
