Evelyn Cassell Obituary

Published by Daily Progress on Aug. 10, 2010.

Evelyn Fay Creasy Cassell

Evelyn Fay Creasy Cassell, 83, of Charlottesville, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 8, 2010, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born in Woodridge, Virginia, on June 24, 1927, to the late Robert "Evans" Creasy Sr. and Mamie Jane Wise Creasy, she was also preceded in death by her husband, John Hascue Cassell Jr.; infant sister, Mabel Pansy Creasy; and brother, Robert E. Creasy Jr.

Evelyn's greatest joy was her family, and she leaves behind a son, Larry Cassell and his wife, Sue, of Charlottesville; a daughter, Debby Waufle and her husband, Dennis, of Columbia, South Carolina; granddaughters, Julie Cassell-Bryant and her husband, Matthew, and Jenny Cassell-Faulknier and her husband, Brian; great-grandchildren, Timothy and Cheyenne Faulknier and Brie and Madeline Bryant, all of Palmyra, Virginia.

Evelyn had a heart of encouragement and giving, and throughout her life and career people far and wide received a listening ear and caring wisdom, a card, or if they were really fortunate, a homemade cake! She returned to work in 1961, after her youngest child began attending school, and worked 25 and a half years, first at Blue Ridge Sanatorium, then on Barringer Ground at the University of Virginia Hospital. Evelyn's retirement gave her the opportunity to enjoy her grandchildren, great- grandchildren, tend to her plants and flowers, to bake cakes, take trips to town and bluegrass festivals with friends and family, and bird-watching.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Slate Hill Baptist Church with the Pastor Rhon Williams officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

The family gives special thanks to Joyce and Doug Wyant, Wanda Creasy and family, Nellie Houchens, and the rest of the Slate Hill family. And also, special thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont for their kind and compassionate care.

Gifts may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA, 22911, or to Slate Hill Baptist Church WMU, 2895 Rolling Road, Scottsville, VA, 24590.
