Harold Atkinson Obituary
He was born December 7, 1920, in Washington, D.C., to the late Harold Bernard Atkinson and Anne Felicia Tait Atkinson. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Lillian A. Atkinson.
He is survived by his children, Rebecca Jackson and her husband, William, and their children, Alexander and Elaine, of Centreville, Virginia, and Carter Atkinson and his wife, Susan, and their children, Abigail and Elizabeth, of Ninole, Hawaii.
Harold graduated as a Chemical Engineer from the University of Maryland and spent his career with the Naval Research Lab and the United States Department of Energy. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War II and was a Deacon at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville. Harold was an avid hiker and loved spending time in the great outdoors. He was an avid conservationist and contributed heavily to many causes including those supporting animal protection and the American Civil War Preservation Trust.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2010, in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, with the Chaplain Katha Bollfrass officiating. A private burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Annual Fellowship fund at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, 250 Pantops Mountain Road, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
