Horace Boykin Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Nov. 6 to Nov. 7, 2010.
Horace S. Boykin Sr. Deacon Horace S. Boykin Sr., of Charlottesville, departed this life on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

He was born on July 24, 1925, in New York City, the son of the late Harry W. Boykin and Mamie Solomon Boykin. He was also preceded in death by his only brother, Harry Daniel Boykin.

Mr. Boykin received his education in the public schools of New York and Virginia. His love of music, through singing, touched the lives and warmed the hearts of many people in the community and surrounding areas. Horace was a quiet mannered, family loving, humble spirit gentleman who loved the Lord. He was not perfect, but he certainly knew the prefect One.

He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and chairman of the Official Board, a member of the Sanctuary Choir, and he was the church Boy Scout Leader. He was also a member of Jefferson Lodge #20 F & A Masons, and he participated in many other community wide activities.

Mr. Boykin was a decorated Purple Heart Marine who served in World War II. He retired from the United States Postal Service, as a letter carrier, for more than 20 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of over 60 years, Maude J. Boykin; four children, Joyce B. Carey and her husband, Raymond, Horace S. Boykin Jr. "Tuckie" and his wife, Olivia, of Charlottesville, Frank L. Boykin and his wife, Becky, of Houston, Texas, and Deborah B. Anderson and her husband, Reginald, of Charlottesville.

Also surviving him are nine grandchildren, four great- grandchildren, three step- grandchildren, two step- great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ollie Brown and Frederica Jones of Charlottesville; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation and gratitude to our Pastor and Assistant Pastor, Dr. Alvin Edwards and Dr. Earl Pendleton and the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church family, Dr. Bruce Clemons and his staff, Dr. Marguerite Lippert and her staff, and The Hospice of Piedmont for all of the support, care, concern, and love given to our loved one.

Horace's favorite quote was "Prayer is the key to Heaven, but Faith unlocks the door."

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church with Dr. Alvin Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

J.F. Bell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements www.jfbellfuneralhome.com.

I looked his name up (if the same person) on Google after looking at a picture of marines taken following the capture of Saipan in WWII. He looked like he and his fellow soldiers were enjoying a great moment together.
