James Edward Cobbs Sr.

James Edward Cobbs Sr., 70, of Howardsville, died on Friday, June 4, 2010, at his home.

He was born on January 23, 1940, in Lynchburg, the son of the late Von Edward and Calvert (Peters) Cobbs.

Mr. Cobbs served in the United States Marine Corps as a sharpshooter in the Mediterranean. He loved animals and wildlife and enjoyed motorcycle riding, hunting, and stock car racing. He was an avid University of Virginia Women's Basketball Fan.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Ellen Ripley Cobbs; two sons, James Edward Cobbs Jr. and his wife, Gloria, of Earlysville, and Von Edgar Cobbs of Howardsville; a daughter, Terry Kay Cobbs of Charlottesville; eight grandchildren, Shauna Perry, Lauren Collier, and Brandon, Kristin, Brittiny, Kelsey, Emily, and Harper Cobbs; two great-grandchildren, Ashlynn and Mason James Perry; a brother, Douglas Cobbs of North Carolina; and two sisters, Phyllis Suttles of Florida and Beverly Hobson of Ashland.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311 or to Legacy Hospice, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 180, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Legacy Hospice for their care and support.
