James Lively Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from May 11 to May 12, 2010.
James F. Lively Sr.

James Fulton Lively Sr. of Keswick died on Monday, May 10, 2010, at Golden Living/The Cedars Nursing Facility in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Jimmy was born on August 1, 1925, in Shadwell, Virginia, the son of the late Julius Lively and Nellie Collins Lively. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Fulton Lively Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Lisbeth Wilson Lively; a grandson, Jason Kendrick Lively; and a brother, Louis Lively.

As a young boy, Jimmy romped with his two older brothers on the undeveloped countryside of Pantops while putting up with a tag-along little sister he liked to lovingly say that "he raised." When World War II broke out, he anxiously awaited his turn to follow his two older brothers into the effort to defend our country. In 1944, he was entered into active service as a Sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers. In two short years he served in the American Theater of Operations, the European Theater of Operations, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations, and the East and North African Campaign. At war's end, Jimmy returned to Charlottesville, where he became a mainstay of the Charlottesville downtown merchants from the 1950's thru the 1970's, serving as one of the finest men's clothing specialists in the area. Jimmy was an avid Civil War buff and relic collector. Much of his collections were pieces he had actually "dug" himself over the forty years he made this his hobby.

Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Shirley Coleman Lively of Keswick; one daughter, Ann Cornett and her husband, Johnny Cornett, of Clarksburg, West Virginia; two grandchildren, Rachel Cornett and Joseph Cornett of Clarksburg; a very special grandson, Travis Lively of Charlottesville; a brother, Julius Lively Jr. of Charlottesville; and a sister, Marie Morris of Troy.

Family night will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Monticello Memory Gardens, officiated by the Reverend David Johnson.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Golden Living/The Cedars Nursing Facility for their love and care for their husband and father over these last four years.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

It was always a treat for us when Uncle Jimmy would make one of his whirlwind stops by our house on a Saturday morning, Jim in tow. A visit from Uncle Jimmy was so revitalizing. He was charismatic, funny, and drop-dead gorgeous. We will miss him, and we will never forget him.
