James Beazell Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Jan. 23 to Jan. 26, 2011.

James R. Beazell

James Ross Beazell, 59, of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, January 20, 2011, after a courageous battle with metastatic melanoma.

He is survived by Elizabeth (Lee) Beazell, his wife of 23 years, his daughter, Stewart age 20 and his son, Ross age 18.

Jim was a physical therapist, site coordinator and residency director at the Musculoskeletal Center at the University of Virginia-HealthSouth outpatient clinic in Charlottesville, Virginia. Prior to moving to Charlottesville in 1998 he had been administrator and site coordinator at HealthSouth facilities in both San Francisco and Santa Rosa, California, a dedicated employee for HealthSouth Corporation for over 23 years. Jim was recipient of the HealthSouth 2003 Clinician of the Year Award.

Jim was perhaps best known in Virginia for founding Orthopedic Manual Therapy Seminars (OMTS) in 2002 and teaching in the OMTS Long Term Orthopedic Manual Therapy Course from 2002 until 2010. In 2009, the OMTS long term course expanded with Jim's guidance into the University of Virginia-HealthSouth Orthopedic Residency, the first APTA accredited Orthopedic Residency Program in Virginia, in 2009.

Jim was an engaging and entertaining teacher. He shared his passion for patient care, clinical education and research with untiring enthusiasm. He was a "walking PubMed". Through his teaching and publications, Jim has helped many physical therapists become better clinicians.

He received his Bachelor of Physical Education Degree magna cum laude from San Francisco State University and his Masters of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from University of Southern California in 1981. He obtained his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. He was a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy and was board certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist by the APTA. Jim was an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy, Virginia Physical Therapy Association, and National Athletic Trainers Association.

Jim was born in Watsonville, California, on April 25, 1949, a son of Richard and Hilda Beazell of Sebastopol, California; and the brother of Jan Nicholas and Brian Beazell of Windsor, California.

Jim was an avid cyclist and member of the Charlottesville Racing Club, the Charlottesville Bicycling Club, Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club as well as former competitive cyclist with both CRC and the Santa Rosa Cycling Team in California. He played rugby for the Los Angeles and San Francisco Rugby Clubs then served as the trainer for SFRC and both the Pacific Coast and USA Rugby teams respectively. He lived life to its fullest. He loved to ride his bike commuting to work every day and spending Saturday mornings riding with his friends. He adored his children and spent much of his free time mentoring them and teaching them the ways of the world. He will be deeply missed by Lee, Stewart and Ross as well as his team mates and neighbors far and near.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2011, at Hamiltons' Restaurant, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of James Ross Beazell, University of Virginia Cancer Center, c/o Scott Karr, Health System Development Office, P.O. Box 800773, Charlottesville, VA 22908.

Dear Lee, Stewart and Ross,
I had the pleasure of taking several courses from Jim at the Institute of Physical Art and through HealthSouth in the SF Bay Area, where I worked in the 1990's. I haven't see Jim since that time, but he was such a great instructor and vibrant person that I remember him vividly to this day. Oddly, those times were when I was mourning the loss of my mother, who had died at 59 years of age. Jim was so filled with positive energy that I remember feeling my spirits lifted greatly in many ways after his courses. I thank you, Jim, for your outstanding contribution to our profession and for your zest for life. To Jim's family, may Jim's love for you help carry you forward.
With sympathy,

I only met Jim twice, but he was an inspiration to me in the field of manual physical therapy, he will be missed!

Dear Lee, Stewart and Ross,
I was so sorry to hear of Buzz's recent passing. Buzz worked with me in SF Orthopaedic from 1989 to 1992. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and worked with him. I will never forget him, and am thinking of ye through this very tough time

Lee, Stewart and Ross, I am so sorry to hear about Buzz passing. He was a fellow student, patient, boss, mentor and most importantly friend. We shared so much from the days at SF State, to working at SF Orthopaedic. Buzz inspired me in many ways as I am sure he did with others. I will miss you Buzz.

My most heartfelt condolences to Lee, Stewart and Ross on the loss of their beloved husband and father. Buzz, as he is affecctionately know by myself and his SF State family, will always be remembered for his wonderful personality, wit and love of life. He and I shared life experiences in many ways: first as teacher/athletic trainer and student, then as therapist and patient and finally as colleagues. Buzz is truly an inspirational mentor to those lucky enough to have known him. Joseph Webb PT/ATC

Lee and family, I was so lucky to have met Buzz while he was in SF. Such an amazing person who was a leader in sports medicine. He treated all his patients as his friends with dedication and compassion. When he was injured playing rugby I was able to see how he coped being the patient. Again a total display of dedication and appreciation. We all will miss him beyond words and will honor him by being the best that we can in everything that we do...just like Buzz.

Lee, Stewart and Ross - we can't imagine having to face such a tragic situation as you all have - but you've done so with love, grace, openess and sincerity - and a strength that must come through faith and love. We hope that knowing how very many people are thinking of you, praying for you, and feeling so sad over losing a friend, brings you some level of comfort and knowledge that you are certainly not alone.

Lee, Stewart and Ross,
I had the honor and pleasure of knowing Jim for over 25 years. We met through the Institute of Physical Art, teaching together on numerous occasions. Jim also introduced me to mountain bike riding, and for that I must have at least a half a dozen broken bones that can be attributed to that, and for that I thank you Jim. I took a ride the day after I heard the sad news in China Camp, here in Marin County. I struggled to the top, knowing that you, in your own way, were both encouraging me to hit the crest, and alternately laughing at me!! I wish I could be there today in person, but am there in spirit, and will take a ride on Mount Tam today in your honor. Thank you for being in my life, being an inspiration to so many, a leader in many circles and a great friend. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Dear Lee, Stewart & Ross,

You are so all in our prayers. I'll always remember the Beazell arrival in Key West that first summer. Fresh from California, I think, attending their first Key West Club pool party, Jim stepped up to the microphone and belted out "(I'm gonna be) 500 hundred miles") In an instant we knew an interesting and unusual man was in our midst; and he loved his wife to pieces and didn't care who knew. Jim, I salute you and miss your solid presence. Godspeed,

Dear Lee, Stewart & Ross,

We are at such a loss for words. Our hearts are broken for all of you. We feel so blessed that we were your neighbors in Mt. Weske Estates for so many years. We had the pleasure of watching your family grow before you left CA. We have so many fun memories of Jim sitting in the driveway working on his bike while Lee was busy mowing the yard or trimming a tree! He would laugh and say she was the best. Jim loved being a husband and loved being a Dad and it reflected in his eyes each time he looked at the three of you. We love you and have you in our prayers.

Dear Lee,
After I heard the news late last week, I thought about Jim often all weekend. Matthew and I talked about how much we enjoyed riding with Jim during our time in Charlottesville - he was always smiling and happy to see us and to be outside riding. I am also forever grateful for his help in rehabilitating my knee many years ago. I'm so sorry he is no longer with us in physical body, but I'll always remember him and treasure the chance to have known him.

My heart goes out to you and your family in this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Thank you Jim for sharing your love for manual therapy, for teaching and learning and mostly for how you cared for people. I did not know your family, but at our first meeting you spoke of them fondly and I respected that of you...that your practice of therapy was not the most important thing to you. You will be remembered.
Sincerely.

Jim was an athlete, therapist and person like no other. I am honored to have been able to call him a colleague and friend. Lee, Stewart, and Ross, we feel like we were just getting to know Jim and we're so sad. Our favorite mental picture of Jim is, of course, him with a karaoke mic in his hand, singing "Fortunate Son." He didn't just sing that song--he owned it.

Dear Beazell Family:

When I needed physical therapy after a terrible fall some years back, Jim was assigned to me as my physical therapist. From the first moment I met him, I was so lifted by his smile, his sense of humor, his encouragement, and his ability to equally empathize and motivate through the tough moments. He literally got me back on my feet again. Blessings and peace to you all as you go through this sad, sad time. I hope your own happy memories of him lift your spirits as he once lifted mine.

Blessings and Peace to everyone he loved and to all who loved him.

Jim was such a great person and always much fun to be around. When he wasn't talking about Lee or his kids was a rare moment indeed. I will miss seeing him on his bike around town and also during trail work days where we usually teamed up and had a great time together.
