Jayne Crigler Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Jul. 18 to Jul. 21, 2010.
Jayne Waugh Crigler

Jayne Waugh Crigler, 89 of Culpeper, died Friday, July 16, 2010. She had suffered a severe stroke in 2007, which left her bedridden, and died after a brief illness.

Jayne was born in Logan County, West Virginia, April 1, 1921. Her parents moved to Culpeper in the 1930's and began Kinloch Farm dairy which produced and delivered Culpeper's first pasteurized milk. Jayne graduated from Mary Washington College and married Bernard Crigler in 1942. She taught a high school business course in Culpeper while Bernard served in the European theater during World War II.

After the war, Jayne and Bernard opened the Magnolia Motel, and, in 1957, they founded Jayne's, Inc., a high-end ladies clothing and specialty store on South Main Street. Jayne produced many fashion shows for local and regional charitable organizations, including Hospice of the Piedmont, served on the Piedmont Environmental Council and was an active member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

Jayne was predeceased by her parents, Goree G. and Eunice D. Waugh; a brother, Goree G. Waugh Jr. "Bill"; and, in 2009, by her beloved husband of 67 years, Bernard.

She is survived by a son, the Hon. B. Waugh Crigler and his wife, Anne, of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Kendall Crigler Crusse and her husband, Patrick, Jason C. Crigler II and his wife, Bethanne, and Stuart Crigler Hall and her husband, Clayton; and three great-grandchildren, Barrett and Spencer Crusse and Mary Campbell Hall.

A service and reception will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 115 N. East Street, Culpeper, Virginia.

Internment will follow at Hebron Lutheran Church, Madison.

The family is grateful for the love and wonderful care given to Jayne by Beth Lam, Helen Lewis, Casey Taylor, Edith Johnson, Barbara Bautista and Minnie Mozingo, for Evan Crowe who so faithfully served Jayne Holy Communion at home, and for God's grace, mercy and love in Christ Jesus.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute in her honor to St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 115 North East Street, Culpeper, VA 22701.
