Jeffrey Hager Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Sep. 29 to Oct. 1, 2010.
Jeffrey Douglas Hager

Jeffrey Douglas Hager, born September 14, 1970, passed away a few minutes after midnight on Tuesday, September 28, 2010.

He fought a courageous battle against a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor during the last three years of his life.

In his teenage years, Jeff was a gifted trumpet player. He attended the Coast Guard Academy. He received a Bachelor's degree in Biology and History from Transylvania University and a Master's degree in Biology from William and Mary College. He loved music and attended hundreds of Grateful Dead concerts.

Jeff, aka Okeepa, hiked the Appalachian Trail in the summer of 1996 and forged friendships that would last a lifetime. Jeff worked as an Archaeologist for William and Mary College, and as a Research Biologist for the University of Virginia. Jeff was an adventure lover and explored the world all the way from the peak of Mt.Katahdin to the depths of the Grand Canyon. Jeffrey fell in love and married fellow adventurer Beverly Richardson. Together they navigated rivers, camped out in the wintery snows, and watched beautiful sunsets. Jeff made great hot wings and was a riveting storyteller. His zest for life and amiable nature made him beloved by many. He will be dearly missed as he embarks on his next great adventure.

Jeffrey is survived by his wife, Beverly; his parents, Elesteen and Mary Hager; his brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Susan Hager; and his nephews, Jackson and Evan Hager.

Donations in Jeffrey's honor can be made to the Appalachian Trail Conference, Arbor Day Foundation, or the National Brain Tumor Society.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 2010, at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ernest Gheen officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Arrangements by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, Virginia 434-263-4097.

Dear Beverly anf Family of Jeff,
We never had the oportunity to meet but I work in Mike Menaker's lab and had the opportunity to work with Jeff during his years in the Biology Dept.
I was sorry to hear of your loss and that his service had taken place on Sunday,so close to home. I would have loved to have been able to meet you and the family he talked about so lovingly. Jeff was truly a kind person and a free spirit. He shared many stories of his hiking adventures at work. Cherish the memories you created with Jeff and he'll never be far away from your heart. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
