John Winn Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from May 23 to May 24, 2010.
John William Winn

John William Winn, born November 4, 1937, in Oswego, New York, left us to be with our Lord on Friday, May 21, 2010.

John was predeceased by his father, John William Winn of Saugus, Massachusetts; his mother, Dorothy Kandt Winn Merritt of Fulton, New York; and his stepfather, James R. Merritt.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Hoffman Winn of Gordonsville; a daughter, Kristin W. Rider and her husband, W.E., and their children, Ashby, Kendall and Annsley; a son, John W. Winn Jr. and his wife, Anne Marie Hepler Winn and their daughters, Rachael and Veronica; a son, David H. Winn; a daughter, Joanne Lee Winn Bradley of Mason, Texas; her husband, Chuck, their son, James and his wife, Maybellene and their children, James, Justin and Jamiellene; a son, Joshua and his wife, Kimberly, and their children, Austin, Hannah, Kadynce, Kyleigh, Rylee; and a son, Charles Bradley. John is also survived by a sister-in-law, Dinah Hoffman Arnott, Mary, Gordon, Travis and Allison of Blacksburg; brothers-in-law, Eugene A. Hoffman and his wife, Sylvia, Andy, Ginger Garton, Jeffrey, Carroll W. Hoffman and his wife, Lucille; a son, Bill; and great-nieces and nephews.

John was a member of the Gordonsville United Methodist Church, and the Men's Breakfast Group, Waddell Masonic Lodge #228 of Gordonsville, was Virginia Governor of the National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, a member of the SAR, and a former member of the Orange County Rescue Squad. He graduated from Glendale High School in Glendale, Ohio, and attended Bowling Green University in Bowling Green Ohio, was a Registered X-Ray Technician and medic during his military career. He was retired from Virginia Dominion Power, and later from ConAgra Frozen Foods and Pilgrims Pride, and was retired from the Virginia Army National Guard.

John loved being a southerner, but would remind you he was a Yankee by birth, adored his family, children and grandchildren, and dog Annie. He loved driving and in later years enjoyed driving Anne to her society events, so enjoyed his family heritage which was discovered only in the last fifteen years, and that he could trace his Winn family back to 1632.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the medical teams at Martha Jefferson Hospital, the University of Virginia Medical Center and his personal doctors and staff who have so aptly cared for him.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Gordonsville United Methodist Church officiated by the Reverend Deborah Koontz and the Reverend William E. Hepler. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010.

In lieu of flowers please make contributions to the Orange County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 466, Orange, VA 22960, Gordonsville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 466, Gordonsville, VA, 22942 or to the Gordonsville Fire Department, P.O. Box 297, Gordonsville, VA 22942.

"Death Is Nothing At All”
“Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, which we still are. Call me by my old familiar name; speak to me in the easy way in which you always use to do. Put no difference in your tone; wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, and pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, let it be spoken without effort, without a trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was; there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight. I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well”
