Joseph Armstead Obituary

Published by Daily Progress on Jan. 6, 2010.
Joseph "Joe" Andrew Armstead

Joseph "Joe" Andrew Armstead, died on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at MCV Hospital. He was eight years old.

Joseph was born April 9, 2001, in Chesterfield, Virginia. His parents are Kristina O. and Clifton Lee Armstead Jr. of Midlothian.

In addition to his parents, Joseph is survived by his older brother, Clifton "Tripp" Lee Armstead III; his paternal great-grandmothers, Magdalene Armstead of Richmond, and Elizabeth Reynolds of Midlothian; his maternal grandparents, Ellen J. Otto and Robert J. Otto, both of Orange, Virginia; his paternal grandparents, Gloria Jean and Clifton Lee Armstead Sr. of Midlothian; his three aunts, Kirsten Otto Samuels and her husband, Charles, of Rapidan, Virginia, Sharonda Lewis and her husband, Donnie, of Midlothian, and Zoe Otto of Mount Crawford, Virginia; three uncles, Andrew H. Otto of Orange, and Seamus and Finn Otto, both of Mount Crawford; three cousins, Corinn and Koron Lewis of Midlothian, and Charlotte G. Samuels of Rapidan; two very special childhood friends, Steven and Zach Newsome of Midlothian; a whole host of other uncles, aunts, cousins and family friends too numerous to mention; and his favorite dog, Casey.

Joseph was a third grade student at J.B. Watkins Elementary School, in Mrs. Behnke's class. He loved school, his teachers and all of his school friends, especially Logan Georgel. Joseph played flag football and always watched the Dallas Cowboys with his dad and brother. He loved going to the beach every summer and was an accomplished boogie-boarder. When he wasn't running, playing and having lots of fun, Joseph loved to snuggle up for a little quiet time with his mama. Joseph had a wonderful sense of humor, a beautiful smile, and a wise, old soul. He was creative and inquisitive, thoughtful and kind, full of spunk and mischief. Joseph's loving heart and amazing generosity of spirit was demonstrated by his wish to donate his organs. Joseph was loved dearly by his family and friends and his loss will be felt for a very long time.

The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, 804-794-1000, from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010, followed by a Prayer Service starting at 7 p.m.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Church of the Epiphany, 11000 Smoketree Drive, Richmond.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Joseph's organ donation, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to LifeNet Health Foundation, 1864 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23453 or at LifeNet-Foundation.org.

I know you will always feel "Joe's" spirit with you siblings and grandparents. The pain is has been horrific from the loss of a precious child like your Joe and it's like nothing else. We all know God has a plan for all that happens in our lives and we often wonder what it could be. He will take care of you and all that loves Joe so dearly.

It has taken me some time to write on this page and I am not a family member or Mom or Dad so I can only imagine the hurt and great sense of loss you have. I know Joe's grand mom Ellen, and remember her stories of your vacations together and Joe's energy.

We do know how special to all of you he is and know you will always carry Joe in your hearts. Remember God is closet in Joe's abscence. Also remember to be absent from the body means being present with the Father. Joe is with the Father (His and our creator) This doesn't lessen the hurt right now, but to know that he saw Joe as so special he wanted him home to share his goodness with many.

Remember God holds you all so tightly and close at this difficult time and I pray his prescence is strong for you all.

God's Blessings and Mercy to all that loved Joe so dearly.

Cliff and family,

I just heard today about your little boy. I know your hearts hurt so much and I am so sorry for your pain. Cliff, you are a wonderful person and I know you and your family will survive this. I will say a prayer that God continues to give you the strength and love you need to heal. I hope you are able to always feel Joe's spirit is with you and know that he is still loving you from Heaven - and that you will see him and hold him again one day.

As I was a student of Ms.Armstead, in that year long class, I quickly admired Mr.Armstead. Always someone to have a smile on her face and advising all who came to her. I have just recently learned of Joseph's death and my thoughts are with you Ms.Armstead. I can't possibly say I understand but I can say that this shouldn't have happended to a wonderful woman like yourself and your family. My prayers are with you during this time. May brighter days and clearer tomorrows also be with you.

Mrs Armstead,

My son Dj is one of your students at Manchester Middle. He came home the other day and told me about your loss and how old Joseph was. I just became numb with sadness because all I could do was think about the grief you as a mother is going through. After reading many of the entries in the guest book in which it is explained how much he was liked and love by everyone he came in contact with I realized that there is no reason to be sad because when you come accross a person like this and you look around at the world we are in you then see that this was an angel on earth who was not ment to be here with us long. He was just passing through to touch people lives that he needed and move on!!!!!! this shows in his picture. If you look at him you can truly see the glow in his face. My prayers, sympathy and love goes out to you and your family in your time of lost. Hope that everytime you look at this picture instead of feeling sadness and crying you see his smile and you laugh and smile of good memories about him and your love for each other.

Little ones with hearts of gold,
Little ones who never get to grow old.
Some may never walk,
Some may never talk.
Yet they have so much to say,
As they live their lives each day.
Their time may be near,
But no complaint do we hear.
They love hugs and smiles,
That time is so worthwhile.
They teach us limitations,
Are simply minor aggravations.
They teach us to be compassionate, warm and gentle,
And to treasure the things that are sentimental.
If their lives are but for a moment,a day, a week, a month or a year,
It is worth the lessson they have for us to hear.
Little ones with hearts of gold,
The lessons they taught us never grow old.

I wanted to send along my love, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. I am Logan Georgel's aunt, and can remember the first time I saw Joe. He was up on stage at the pre-school end of year presentation. I asked my sister who the cute little boy was, and it was Logan's little sister, Brooke, who told me, "That is Joseph." They both thought the world of him. He made an impression then, as he did in the years that followed, with his strong friendship he had with Logan and so many other children. He will definitely be missed. You now have an angel watching over you each and every day.

To the family of young Joseph, I know your pain, I don't know you but I know what you are going through, I too lost my son at a very young age he was younger than Joseph at the time, in fact if he was still here in the flesh today he would have been twenty, but the pain is still fresh. Let no one tell you that the pain will go away, it may ease to the point where you can go on with your life but you will never forget your child his beautiful smile will always be etched in your memory to remind you of what you have lost...but you have also gained something wonderful from this, Joseph will always be looking down upon you smiling that beautiful smile as always, I always imagine my son looking down on me telling me mom that's not right or mom I'm so proud of you. I'm not trying to make light of the situation but honey let yourself survive in joseph's eyes he's one of the most beautiful angel now. God bless you and may heaven smile upon you in this time of grief. and when all the well wishers are all gone look up toward heaven and blow your angel a kiss!

I have been struggling to find any words to say all week. There are so many memories of Joe in kindergarten - learning, being a wonderful friend, and his sweet smile. He is loved by all of us here at Watkins, as I know he is loved by all of you in his family. He will forever be in our hearts, but I will miss seeing him everyday, especially on the days he was walking by with you or his Dad and Tripp at the end of a school day. I would look forward to his hugs and smiles. You are in my prayers and will continue to be as you face the days ahead.

Dear Armstead Family,

I can't tell you how shocked I was to hear of Joe's untimely passing. I only met Joe once as his substitute teach last year, but I knew he was such a sweet fellow. I've known Tripp for a couple of years and I know you have a wonderful family. My older son has brought many of the family's cousins around and I know how much they too are all hurting. God bless you for Joe's precious last gift to this world. It was so selfless of you to think of others at your most desperate hour. If there is anything I can do, know that Koron or Will can get in touch with me and I will do anything you need. God bless your whole family as your heart is broken and is trying to heal.

We are so saddened by the loss of your precious child. He was such a light in our lives. My Logan misses her "Best Friend" Joe! She is so lucky to have truly experienced the meaning of friendship. She will continue to remember Joe and the FUN times they had together. My family and I love you ALL. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Christina, Tripp, and Cliff
Please know that you and your entire family are in the thoughts and prayers of many many people! Joe was such a special young man and touched so many lives during his short time with us.There are many hugs waiting for Tripp when he returns to school. May God heal your heavy heart, knowing that you have so many friends praying for you right now. I am so truly sorry for your loss and will miss Joe's smiling face in the hall but have it permanently etched in my heart! God Bless your family right now and forever!

We do not have the right words to say,
But may God be with you in every way.
We know Joseph is doing well,
For with the LORD he now doth dwell.
Our faith will be our mighty fort,
And angels surround us for support.

There are no words to describe how deeply sorry we are for you. Molly's heart is broken for Tripp and his loss of such a special brother. When I think of Joe, I will remember his sweet, smiling face. Your family is in our constant prayers and thoughts. May God wrap you in his arms and give you the strength to endure.
