Joyce Paytes Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Jul. 19 to Jul. 20, 2010.
Joyce Verling Paytes

Joyce Verling Paytes, of Charlotte, North Carolina, formerly of Orange, passed into eternal life Saturday, July 17, 2010.

Joyce was born June 4, 1937, in Unionville. She was the daughter of the late Walter "Geroge" Verling Sr. and Virginia Swain Verling of Rhoadesville.

She loved to laugh, and she will be fondly remembered for her boundless generosity and strength of spirit. Her dedication to her family and her ceaseless loyalty to friends are her legacy. She will live on through our memories, even as she seeks her endless reward in heaven.

Prior to retirement, Joyce worked at Orange County High School, and later was the office manager at C. R. Butler, Inc., both in Orange. Joyce was a member of Rhoadesville Baptist Church.

After moving to Charlotte in April, 2004, Joyce spent many happy hours with her fellow "Golden Girls" playing games together, some of her favorites being mah-jongg, bridge and canasta.

Joyce was met at the gates of heaven by her mother and father. She was also preceded into life everlasting by her late husband, Norman Ray "Jackie" Paytes Sr.; her son, Thomas Glenn "Tommy" Paytes; and her dear friend, Robert P. "Bobby" Butler.

Joyce is survived by two children, Tamara "Tammy" Paytes of Spotsylvania and Norman Ray Paytes Jr. and his wife, Leslie of Matthews, North Carolina. Joyce is also survived by four grandchildren, Lindsey, Ashley, Hayley and Austin Paytes; her sister, June Verling Bledsoe and her husband, Robert "Bubber", of Rhoadesville; her brothers, William Raymond "Bill" Verling of Abingdon and Walter George "Buddy" Verling Jr.; mother-in-law, Margaret Paytes of Fredericksburg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the Johnson Funeral Home, Constitution Highway, Locust Grove, Virginia.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Orange Baptist Church, Main Street, Orange.

Following a graveside service at Graham Cemetery, a reception will take place at the church for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to encourage donations to the Community Services funds of the Orange Baptist Church and the Rhoadesville Baptist Church.
