Kathy Jean Fox Kurtz, 44, of Afton, passed away Sunday, November 8, 2009, at Augusta Health, due to complications from several pre-existing health conditions following surgery.

She was born October 30, 1965, in Waynesboro, daughter of Robert C. and Agnes Critzer Fox.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert C. Fox in 1998; and her mother, Agnes Fox in 2007.

Kathy was a member of Rodes United Methodist Church. She loved her family, her church family, and all animals, especially her chihuahuas. She recently lost Daisy, who she will now join in Heaven.

Survivors include her son, Randy Kurtz of Afton; sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Bruce Kostoff of Afton; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Carol Fox of Fishersville; sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Richard Martin of Waynesboro; nieces and nephews, Kim Martin and her fiance, Joe Leavell, Sara F. Dean and her husband, Travis, and Nicholas Martin; three great-nephews, Jacob Leavell, Tyler Leavell and Alex Dean.

She was very close to a special aunt, Effie Critzer; and cousin, Carol Critzer, who provided her support since the death of her mother over two years ago. She also leaves her ex-husband, Sam Kurtz, of Afton, who was very supportive during her final days.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Clint Merritt for his special care of Kathy during her last days, and the intensive care nurses, Sara Mchaffa and Laura Preganz.

A service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at Rodes United Methodist Church with the Reverend Richard McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Nick Martin, Butch Critzer, Vance Swink, Gabe Davis, David Garwood, Jimmy Garwood, Terry Kennedy Sr. and Michael Cook. Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.

The family will receive friends at the church social hall following the service for fellowship and refreshments, and other times will be held at the homes of her brother and sisters. The casket will be open at the church prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rodes United Methodist Church, 86 Avon Road, Afton, VA 22920 or the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, 29 Stagebridge Road, Lovingston, VA 22969.

May you all be able to draw strength from our Heavenly Fatherly to help you through. He promises he will be there, all we have to do is believe. It seems hard to lose someone so young, but Our God has a plan and he probably needed one more beautiful Angel to help with the great celebration of his son's Birthday this year.

Kathy and I rode the bus together and her and my older sister Janie were friends. I remember how cool I thought she was when she rode the bus. She always dressed well and her hair and makeup where perfect at all times. I am so surprised to hear of her passing. I had not seen her in many many years. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and close friends at this time.

Kathy was my oldest and dearest childhood friend! During the years our family live in Afton, I think first of Kathy in my memories. We always had fun playing together at her house...I never wanted to go home at the end of the day! Whether we played barbies, fed the goats, or just hung out, we always loved being together! I was so happy to reconnect with her on facebook recently and so sad to hear of her passing away so soon! She still had the same gentle, loving spirit I remember her having as a child! I could tell she was so proud of her son and little chihuaha Athena. May God's love and comfort be with you all during this time of grief and give you strength for the days ahead.

Kathy was one of my oldest and dearest childhood friends!! When I think of our family's time living in Afton growing up, I think first of Kathy and all the fun times playing together at her house...and me not wanting to come home afterwards!! We always had so much fun whether it was playing barbies, feeding the goats outside, or just being together! I was so happy to reconnect with her recently through facebook. She still had the same gentle, loving spirit I remember from childhood. I could tell she was so proud of her son and little chihuaha Athena...I remember her wonderful love for her little chihuahas growing up! I was so sad to hear the news of her passing away so soon. May God love and comfort be with you during this time of sadness and give you strength for the days ahead.

Our hearts are deeply saddened at the death of Kathy. It was such a joy to catch up with her recently through Facebook friends. She seemed to be happy and content living at your parents' homeplace. We have such fond memories of her childhood as Beth's favorite friend and playmate. Beth did not want to come home when we would go to pick her up from playing with Kathy. She loved being at her house, playing with the pet goats and dogs and playing Barbies with Kathy. They loved being together. May you know the peace and comfort that only God can give through your family and friends. We love you.
