Lawrence McKinley Dillard

Lawrence McKinley Dillard, 62, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, departed this life peacefully at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital on Saturday, May 22, 2010.

He was born on September 20, 1947, in Esmont, Virginia, son of the late Catheleen Toledo Dillard and George Grant Simpson.

He served in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged in 1969. Lawrence was a 30 year employee of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and retired in 2007 due to his failing health. He was also a past Master Mason of Brighton Rock Lodge #133 Prince Hall.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Bertha Weaver; and father-in-law, Edison Weaver.

He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of 32 years, Alethea Dillard; two daughters, Shanell and Eboni; two sons, Kelvin and his wife, Angela, and Tory; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; five sisters, Marion Rush, Louise and Curtis Feggans, Doris and Maxwell Morris, Cora and Marchel Anderson, and Rebecca and Martin Rush; two brothers, Herbert and Doris and Terry Dillard; three sisters-in-law, Natalie Cherry, Angela Epps, and Phyllis Hurdle; three brothers-in-law, Dana and Derrick Weaver, and Ervin Epps; a mother-in-law, Alberta Weaver; a "sisterly" cousin, Nancy Porter ; a best friend who was more like a brother, Al Ford; a special cousin, Eliza Anderson; two aunts, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2010, at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Esmont, Virginia, by the Reverend Dorn H. Lewis.

A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2010, at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Chesapeake, Virginia, by the Reverend Kirk T. Houston Sr.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and the Camelot and Sentara Beach Dialysis Centers.

Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville is handling the arrangements.
