Louis M. Kauder

Louis Marshall Kauder, 75, of Keswick, died of complications from leukemia on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sally, of Keswick; his daughters, Nancy Schreiber of Baltimore and Carol Kauder, of Boulder, Colorado; his sons-in-law, Martin Schreiber and Charles Suthard; two grandchildren, Camilla Schreiber and Samuel Schreiber; and his sister, Susan Schwirck of Monroe, New Jersey.

Lou Kauder was born in Newark, New Jersey, on May 30, 1934, to Florence and Leo Kauder. He grew up in Somerville, New Jersey, and graduated from Syracuse University in 1955. He was a reserve officer in the United States Army, having completed the basic officers' training course at the Armor School at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in 1956. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1961.

He married Sally Lawrence on July 23, 1962. They settled in Alexandria, Virginia, and raised two daughters, Nancy and Carol.

Following a clerkship with Justice Frederick Hall of the New Jersey Supreme Court, Lou joined the United States Justice Department in Washington, where he served as a trial and appellate attorney, first in the Civil Rights Division, 1962 until 1966, and then the Tax Division, 1967 until 1969. During this period Lou argued over 30 cases in the United States Courts of Appeals throughout the United States and participated fully in numerous cases heard in the United States Supreme Court. He also earned an LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown Law School in 1969. From 1969 until 1972, Lou was a senior attorney in the Office of International Tax Counsel, United States Treasury Department. Throughout his legal career, Lou published numerous articles on international tax issues.

In the years 1972 until 1991, Lou was an associate, and then a partner, at the D.C. law firm of Shea and Gardner, where he specialized in federal taxation.

Lou and Sally moved to Keswick in 1995 where they resided in the Glenmore subdivision. Since 1995, Lou was an active clarinetist and saxophonist performing classical, musical theater, and jazz at numerous venues in central Virginia. For several years the Lou Kauder Trio periodically performed at jazz nights at the Glenmore Country Club. Lou gave several classical and jazz recitals over the years for the Wednesday Music Club of Charlottesville, and performed in orchestras at the Culbreth Theater, Ash Lawn, and Live Arts in Charlottesville, among others. Since 2005, Lou had been a member of the Board of Directors of the University Symphony Society, the principal support group for the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra. Lou served as president of that Board for the 2008 until 2009 Season. Lou was an active tennis player and golfer for many years, and recently served three years as captain of the senior golf team at the Glenmore Country Club.

Friends are welcome to join the family at a celebration of his life from 3 until 5 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010, at the Glenmore Country Club.

Contributions to the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra in Lou's memory would be gratefully received at CUSO, P.O. Box 4206, Charlottesville, VA 22905.
