Margaret B. Hantzmon

Margaret Elizabeth Brown Hantzmon died peacefully after a short battle with cancer on Sunday, September 26, 2010.

Peggy was born on October 15, 1933, in Bluefield, West Virginia, to the late Margaret Elizabeth Lazenby Brown and Clark Moore Brown.

After growing up in Bluefield and Richlands, Virginia, she graduated from Richlands High School in 1950 and Westhampton College (The University of Richmond) in 1954. During her college summers, Peggy was a camp counselor at Camp Wawenock, Lake Sebago, Maine, where she taught archery and was the camp bugler. Not only was she an acclaimed archer, but Peggy also played basketball and field hockey in high school and college and was an avid swimmer as well. After college, she taught math at Culpeper High School before enrolling in graduate school (education) at the University of Virginia.

After graduate school, Peggy worked at People's National Bank in Charlottesville before marrying Richard Van Emon Hantzmon on May 7, 1960. After marriage, she devoted herself to full-time motherhood of her three sons.

She was also very active in her church, Wesley Memorial United Methodist, volunteered at Greenbrier Elementary, and enjoyed swimming laps during the summer at Fairview Swim Club.

She is survived by her husband, Van Hantzmon of Charlottesville; her children, Stephen Van Emon Hantzmon and Jennifer B. Green of Durham, North Carolina, and their children, Sarah Virginia Hantzmon and Andrew Foster Hantzmon; Richard Clark Hantzmon and James R. Carnes of Charlottesville; and Matthew Wesley Hantzmon and Jennie Jane Hantzmon of Charlottesville and their children, Matthew Wesley Hantzmon Jr., William Clark Hantzmon, John Stephen Hantzmon and Thomas Treganowan Hantzmon.

She is also survived by her sister, Sue Clark Brown Tapp and her husband, James D. Tapp, of Jacksonville, Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, 11 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2010. There will be a reception following the service. Parking at the church is limited, but University of Virginia's Central Grounds Parking Garage (aka Newcomb Hall Parking Garage) is directly across Emmet Street from the church.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Hospice of the Piedmont, or to a cancer charity of your choosing.

I never knew Peggy, but am a classmate of Van. I am so sorry to hear of this. Van lives at Rosewood, and I visit him when I go to see my brother-in-law, John Johnson. You are in my prayers at this time.
