Peter Dickinson Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Sep. 28 to Sep. 29, 2010.

Peter Edward Roy Dickinson

Peter Edward Roy Dickinson, 61, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 25, 2010, due to complications of Huntington's Disease.

Born in London, England, Peter grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from Cincinnati Country Day School. He went on to graduate from the University of Virginia School of Commerce, class of 1972. He obtained his CPA and was a solo practitioner for many years, well-known for his expertise as well as his sense of humor. He was active in numerous professional and civic organizations.

Peter was a picture of faith and grace under fire. He valiantly battled Huntington's Disease for over 15 years. Under these most difficult circumstances, Peter maintained a positive, prayerful, and thankful attitude. He managed to focus on the glass half full and not dwell on his many losses. He leaves many to cherish his example and memory.

We are particularly glad that last year Peter stepped out and accepted his son's invitation into adventure. Leaving behind the security of his nursing home, Peter explored thousands of miles throughout India and Nepal, much of it riding a motorcycle behind his son Jonathan. We eagerly await the documentary film's completion which details this journey of faith. For more information, visit fatherspirit.com.

The family wishes to thank the many people who assisted Peter in his journey: in particular, Trinity Presbyterian Church members Bill Cassidy, Carlton Dixon, and Gary Hougan, who provided years of companionship and service. We are also very grateful for the loving care of RoseWood Village over these last two years. Special thanks goes to Sherry Dudley for her faithful and tireless devotion to his well-being.

Peter is loved and remembered by his wife, Sara Bloxom Dickinson and the Bloxom family; his daughter, Jenny Dickinson and her husband; and his son, Jonathan Dickinson. His memory is also cherished by his mother, Jane Dickinson Barrows and husband; his brother, Philemon Dickinson II and family; his sister, Amy Dickinson Beckwith and family; as well as many extended family members. He was predeceased by his sister, "Tudie" Dickinson Morrison and his father, Philemon Dickinson, both from HD.

A private family service is planned. Condolences may be sent online www.teaguefuneralhome.com.

We cherish the sojourn in our home by Jonathan and his dad, in the Spring of 2008. Peter was a gracious guest and an inspiration to us all.

Dear Dickenson Family,
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Sara,
I am so sorry for your loss of Peter. I know you suffered with him through his many trials. I feel for your children as well -- sounds like they had a wonderful dad.

Sara, I so enjoyed the time we spent before the Bennett reunion last fall. It was great to catch up with you, and get a glimpse of your life, and Peter's too. It sounded like you had already been courageous through a tough time. My thoughts are with you!
Sincerely,
Marie Miles Beckman

Years ago Peter and I were business friends. I am so sorry for his passing and know his life has made a difference. What a wonderful son. What a great dad.

Dear Sara and Family - although sad to hear of Peter moving on to be with his Lord, it is also wonderful to hear of his full life, his family and the support of his friends. As a UVa Phi Sig, those 4 or 5 short years bonded us all together for life and I am sorry but also at peace to see our Brother Peter pass on to his eternal life.

Sara and family, I was sad to learn of Peter's passing and that such a disease had affected him and your family so. We had some fun times many, many years ago when Peter and Bruce had their offices at 105 W High Street. I worked upstairs in the law office of Fred Colmer. I know that the Lord will bring you comfort and strength in the days, months and years ahead until you will be together again.

Sara & Family, I remember the times Peter would come into the office back when I was at HW&Co. - he was always so upbeat and full of life. A gentle soul, I could tell. My condolences to you all.

Peter was a kind, and good man. He was a joyful dancer at Fridays After Five. I'm glad he was my neighbor. He will be missed. Deepest Sympathy to Peter's family.

Having known Peter for many years, and watched as he lived his life so joyfully in spite of the disease, it was so wonderful to learn of his adventures with his son, Jonathan. My fondest memories of Peter is seeing him dance at Friday After Fives concerts with Sara and totally enjoying himself. My prayers and condolences to his family and many friends.
