Susan Wright Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Sep. 10 to Sep. 17, 2010.

Susan Wright

Susan Wright, 56, of Barboursville, passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2010, at her home.

Born in Baltimore and raised outside Annapolis, Susan spent grade school summers sailing with family on the Chesapeake Bay. She attended Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, where she created her own major, Contemporary Humanities, to concentrate on the 20th century, minoring in Journalism. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

After college, she returned to Baltimore to write about news and neighborhoods for local newspapers and Food and Fine Living Magazine, until she was hired by the mayor to work in his press office. While handling PR for the infamous Mayor William Donald Schaefer, she also worked on her Masters in Administrative Science at Johns Hopkins University. Her success in local politics led to a stint as press secretary to a Pennsylvania congressman in the first $1 million congressional race. It was a nail-biter: her candidate won by less than a half percent.

Susan returned to her roots after that, plying her writing skills in the world of boats and all things marine. At the Boat Owner's Association of the United States (BOAT/US) she wrote educational materials for boaters on topics like life jackets, emergency maneuvers and equipment, boating safety, plus product testing articles aimed at educating boating consumers on how to select and properly use boating equipment.

There she met her husband, David, and the two became a team, changing venues about the country, wherever their marine merchandising work took them, including St. Augustine, Florida, Santa Cruz, California, Charleston, South Carolina, and Sarasota, Florida. Their partnerships along the way included dot.com startup and Forbes website award-winner Sailnet.com, and MariSafe.com, both of which they helped build from the ground up.

Family and business matters brought both Susan and David back to Virginia in 2005, which is when Susan joined Plow and Hearth as a copywriter.

She loved to read, travel, sail, swim, sun (anything at the beach) and compete in dog agility trials with her four-legged child, Scooter the wily fox terrier.

In addition to her husband, Susan is survived by her parents, George and Jane Gardill Koran of Port Charlotte, Florida; her brother, Bruce Koran of High Point, North Carolina; and her sister, Andrea Robey of Severna Park, Maryland.

A gathering of friends to celebrate Susan's life will be held at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 4 until 6 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in Susan?s name to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Way, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911

I still think of Susan quite a lot. She wasn't long in my life, but the strength she left is the part of her I will never forget. She was a brilliant and lovely person and this world is worse for her loss. I know David misses everyday and with that she will never leave him.

I will always remember Susan as the strongest person I have ever met. She was certainly beautiful outside, but inside she was made of beauty and steel. No one had more grace under all that she endured. I miss her grace all the time. She was a rarity and I will always feel so blessed to have known her humor and her love of life.

David and Susan have my eternal gratitude for encouraging me to share my life and home with a dog. Susan gave me my first owners manual and patiently answered all my emails about what to do when the dog does... What can I say, except that good friends are rare and she is surley missed. Susan worked with me at BoatU.S. Foundation when we were just getting off the ground. She was always smiling and always up for a challenge. We were always knee deep in new ideas and Susan made every day fun. Her work was alway top notch because of her incredible talent but most importantly - she cared.

Susan was so full of life; so much so that she made you forget just how much she had endured over the past few years. She spoke freely about her illness and treatment but not once did I ever feel that she was seeking sympathy or feeling sorry for herself. How she managed to maintain such an incredible sense of humor and quick wit through it all is beyond me.

I worked with Susan at Plow & Hearth; she was a fellow copywriter and my second set of eyes, a proofreading queen she was - but she became so much more over the years.

I will miss hearing her take on the world, whether it be politics or travel or books ... or any of the other gazillion things she knew so much about. And I will miss seeing those sparkling blue eyes never once dulled by the disease she fought so courageously. I truly hope they are taking in all of the sights someplace warm, peaceful and beautiful.

She was and will always be a treasured friend.

Susan and I worked together many years ago, and she always amazed me with her unflagging optimism. She was fun, funny, smart, generous, courageous and just a wonderful person. Jeff and I will miss her.

The sun shines less brightly without Susan in the world. Her spirit and dertermination to live her life to the fullest no matter what is a constant inspiration to me. She will be greatly missed.

As my desk is in the lobby of Plow & Hearth, most everyone has to walk past me. I was honored that I got to see Susan each day she worked with us. And she was always smiling, even when we knew she wasn't feeling well. She touched each of us with her spirit and we shall miss her. May God bring you comfort during this time. We will be keeping all of the family in prayer.

I got acquainted with Susan through dog agility. She and Scooter were a wonderful team. I especially remember one lunch we had together, talking at length about chemotherapy, which I had recently finished and which she was undergoing. I admired Susan's spirited, unself-pitying determination to keep living her life as fully as she could, as long as she could. I will make a donation to Hospice in her memory.

I had the pleasure of working and getting to know Susan at Plow and Heart. She was such a wonderful person with the happiest outlook on life, never complaining about her health. What an inspiration she was to us all. May God blessings and peace be with her husband and family, trust in God and He will comfort you all. Pat Shiflett

I will miss Susan every day of my life. She showed us all how to do it with grace and dignity. It was such an honor to know both her and David. As she said, he was was her true love and best friend and companion. I hope he can take comfort in that. My thoughts are with him and her beloved Scooter. She will be truly missed.
