Terence Sieg Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Apr. 20 to Apr. 22, 2011.
Terry Sieg

Terence Yglesias Sieg died on Sunday, April 17, 2011.

He was born on April 7, 1942, in Long Beach, California, a son of James Wallace "Wally" Sieg and Aurora Yglesias Sieg. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Richard "Dick" Sieg, and is survived by his eldest brother, James "Jim" Sieg.

Terry attended Rumson Fairhaven High School in Rumson, New Jersey, and received his Bachelor of Arts in English literature from the University of Virginia in 1964. He was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity and the Z Society.

He is survived by his three children, Ashley Williams and Kendall Duffy of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Derek Sieg of Los Angeles, California. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Brendan Duffy, age 8, June Williams, age 3, and Wallace Williams, age 1.

Terry was a standout football player at the University of Virginia and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns of the NFL. After marrying Barbara Beaman, Terry and Barbara lived for ten years in New York City where Terry worked in the publishing industry. In 1976, Terry moved his family down to Charlottesville to take over his father's beer distribution company, J. W. Sieg and Company. The J.W. Sieg and Company family meant the world to Terry, and he spent many happy afternoons watching Virginia football games with the employees of the company where Terry spent so many years.

Among other pursuits, Terry was an avid fly fisherman and pursued permit and rainbow trout wherever he thought he might find them, often taking his children with him to share in what was his most treasured pastime.

Protecting the environment was a passion of Terry's, and he worked closely with the Southern Environmental Law Center for many years in an effort to do his part in preserving the natural world for future generations.

There will be a graveside service at Emmanuel Episcopal Cemetery in Greenwood, Virginia, 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2011.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to the Southern Environmental Law Center, 201 West Main Street, Suite 14, Charlottesville, Virginia 22902.

The # 7 when God finished creation he rested from all his works. He called it the Sabbath. Representing completion. The #8 in the Bible is associated with the Holy day celebration called the Feast of Tabernacles or harvest or in gathering. Hebrew name is Succoth. Its a Feast that is celebrated for 7days but there is a 8th day celebrated at the end. This 8th day is called the great last day. Reason, because it Represents New beginning. Yep NEW beginning. I pray on this 8th year of Mr. Sieg passing that all of you who remember this man & loved this man have done just that. Our love goes out to you Family & friends. I pray Gods continued strength and love will comfort you all thru out the rest of your life in Jesus name.

I remember Terry as a gentleman scholar and a wonderful competitor. I played against Terry in high school and with him at UVA. He was directly responsible for my getting a football scholarship at UVA. I am forever greatful for all he did for me. We have lost a true Virginia Gentleman.

There was something about Terry Sieg that was never bound to this Earth. His artistic nature and esoteric sense of life were often beyond the reach of all who loved him. He was like the birds he wrote of in his Children's novel and his spirit soared above us all, long before his life would be lost. He could never quite communicate the vision of all he saw and felt and heard in the world of Nature that he loved so much. His great physique belied the sensitive soul beneath and though we saw glimpses of how he felt, we were never fully aware of the depth of his emotion. It is our loss for him to leave so soon and so tragically but love never dies and so many of us loved him more than he ever knew. Pam and Joe Brown

Dear Ashley, Kendall and Derek,
You have been everpresent in our thoughts and prayers over the past few days. From childhood days on 21 Curves to tapping kegs for J.W. Sieg, both Michael and I loved and admired your dad immensely. We will remember him fondly. I'm sorry we weren't able to attend the service on Friday to give you all a hug. Sending you cyber hugs and our deep condolences.

Love,

Dear Barbara, Derek, Ashley, Smith, Kendall and children,

I was reminiscing with my father about the colorful ski suit Terry wore on visits to Jackson in the winter. However, I believe the last time I laughed with Terry was water skiing in the Bahamas. He sure could power through the turns, and in doing so he made my dad envious of his slalom talents.

If I were as eloquent and kind mannered as Terry this would be easier to say, but I hope the future holds many more good memories to share of his storied past. I will never forget the many adventures my father tells of his longstanding friendship with Terry, nor will I forget the times we shared. There were simply too many smiles and bursts of laughter. Terry will be missed and I wish everyone well in the following weeks, years and beyond.

Dear Barbara and Seig Children,
There was a certain chemistry of people at UVa when the Welsh football program was initiated and combined with the already popular and winning Holland Basketball program. It was an exciting and winning time. The Town and Gown were one.
Terry and Barbara, with small children, were constantly behind both programs with their presence, ideas, and energy.Combined with the Carl Smiths, Tom Worrells, Joe Palumbos and Dewey Shifletts ,and hundreds of people older and younger. It was a shared experience that may never come again at UVa. It is a tribute to Terry and Barbara that it ever happened at all....I for one am glad that I shared in the magic of those years. Terry was a winning Hoo on and off the gridiron. He is probably already fishing with Saint Peter or organizing a pick-up game of some sort.

To the SIeg Family,
I was blessed by meeting Terry at ST last year in Arizona and my life was forever changed. He was a true Gentle Man, a kind soul with an insightful childlike wander for his purpose for life at that time. His presence upon entering a room warranted many heads to turn and for many to stop and take note that he had arrived. It was as if a King had arrived. Once while in a session of about 20 friends together each was asked to place their right hand on the head of the person they thought was a King in their past life and the left hand on the person they thought was a Queen (Terry and I were chosen by every person in the room immediately). This man was a gift to the world, we were blessed to know him for whatever amount of time God put him in our lives. I can't help but to note that he died on Palm Sunday- the day Jesus re-entered Jerusalem and people laid down palms as they would in that day to honor a KING then just yesterday on Good Friday his burial took place which is the day of Jesus death ( 3pm to be exact) and I was at church and could not stop thinking about Terry. I did not know why? I now know why. I am certain he is in God's hands and I pray for your family and Terry and will remember him all the days of my life!!!
Peace be with you!

To the Sieg Family,

I am sorry for your loss. Although I did not know Terry well, I remember him as a kind person, especially to his Father. I worked for Terry's Father as an Administrative Assistant, when he lived at University Village and later at Westminster Canterbury for several years and I know where Terry got his personality and compassion from.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Sieg Family. Remember all the good times.

To all of the Sieg Family,

As a late comer to the Sieg family business, my heart goes out to the survivors and to the memory of Terrence...

Upon my hiring with JW Sieg Wines, Terry and I shared an immediate bond for our passion for food, wine, writing, fishing and the pursuit of the real reasons we do what we do...

PASSION...

I am humbled to have shared my small amount of time on this earth that he was in my sphere...

Coming from a family run business environment, I will always treasure the emphasis he placed on such virtues and look forward to encompassing his legacy in the future with JW Sieg Wines...
