Vance Orpheus Bright Jr.

Vance Orpheus Bright Jr., 81, of Palmyra, died on Saturday, May 15, 2010.

He was born on January 19, 1929, in Morganton, North Carolina, the son of Vance O. and Isabelle Amelie Salvageot Bright.

A retired naval architect/ engineer with the United States Department of the Navy, Mr. Bright was a 1952 graduate of the Newport News Apprentice School, where he worked for 17 years. During his long career, Mr. Bright worked in the design and construction of several United States naval vessels including several aircraft carriers and the ocean liner "The United States".

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Girton Bright of Palmyra; two daughters, Cheryl Frances Bright of Falls Church, Virginia, and Mary Lynne Bright of Palmyra; one son, W. Edward Bright of Irvington, New York; two brothers, Bill A. Bright of Valdese, North Carolina, and Edward B. Bright and his wife of Newport News; one sister, Nellena B. Thomas of Winston Salem, North Carolina; and a number of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind Moochie, Terri and Buck, his furry companions.

A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Cunningham United Methodist Church in Palmyra, Virginia.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont in, Charlottesville, Virginia, Caring for Creatures, Palmyra, Virginia, or to the Fluvanna SPCA.
