Varilyn Ann DeWyke Lucero

Varilyn Ann DeWyke Lucero, 66, died peacefully, in her home, on Sunday, August 1, 2010, after a long struggle with advanced lung disease.

Varilyn was born in Fort Collins, Colorado to Joseph LeRoy DeWyke, 1896-1974, and Mable Beatrice Kollmer Gardner DeWyke 1910-1976.

She was one of five children, Robert Laverne Gardner of Kansas, Dennis and Charlene DeWyke of Cave Junction, Oregon, Vayrene and Marcus Norton of Westminster, Colorado, and Denzil Allan DeWyke, 1950-2009, of Anaheim, California.

Varilyn made her way from Colorado, through Michigan and New York, to Virginia, settling in Charlottesville in 1980.

Varilyn leaves behind two children and three grandchildren, son, Don Scott Lucero and his wife, Renee Rocheleau-Lucero, with their children, Gillian Alexandra Lucero and Andrew Scott Lucero; and daughter, Lei Lani Kayrene Lucero, her partner, Lisa Mason, with her son, Patrick Henry Scott Lucero Toler.

Varilyn loved her feline companions, and was predeceased by Abner, Dizzy, Smudge, Spooky, Cricket, Peanut and Boogie. She is survived by Moochie, aka Jughead.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff of Hospice of the Piedmont (especially Antonia Douglas) and the staff at Interim Health Care for the support provided during the last year of Varilyn's life. We also wish to thank Bonijean Isaacs, who was mom's companion, caregiver, and a kindred spirit.

A celebration of Varilyn's life will be held graveside at Holly Memorial Gardens, 2:30 p.m. Friday, August 13, 2010.

In lieu of flowers, we suggest that donations be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, or your local SPCA or Humane Society. We also suggest that everyone tell their family and friends how much they mean to you.
