She was born in Rapidan, Virginia, on March 31, 1918, the daughter of the late W. A. Dennis and Lula Harlow Dennis.

Viola was the Supervisor and Program Director of the Charlottesville Recreation Department for twenty seven and a half years. She will be fondly remembered for helping to raise the "Belmont Boys" and for the many hours of fun the children of Charlottesville, had with her at the city skating rink. After retirement she was the Director of Admission and Medical Records for a local nursing facility for ten years.

She was an active member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law William David and Betsy Sheffield of Charlottesville; her daughter and son-in law, Winnie Faye Sheffield and Bill Coyne of Florida and Wisconsin; and her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Sue Sheffield of Charlottesville; six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Barbara Linsey of Savannah, Georgia, Julie Howard of Charlottesville; and her brother, Charles Dennis of Fredericksburg.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, W. T. Sheffield; and by her second husband, Harry L. Pugh; a daughter, Rozanne Sheffield Smith; one sister and five brothers.

The family is eternally grateful to her caregivers Juanita, Mary, and Missy, as well as to Dr. Jonathan Evans and the staff at The Laurels for the love and care they provided to our loved one.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the Cherry Avenue Christian Church with Mr. Stan Martin officiating. Interment will be held at Monticello Memory Gardens immediately following the service. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Mike and Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. This first year will be difficult, I just went through this myself so try to remember the good times. God did not promise eternal life, but it is difficult to accept life without a love one. We care.

All the Gormans have many fond memories of Granny Pugh. She always seemed to be happy and especially glad to see any little children who stopped to see her. We will miss being able to see her when we were in Charlottesville, but know she has gone to a better place. We love you Granny, Lara, Larry, Meredith, Benjamin and William.

Charlottesville has never seen, nor is likely ever to see again, the likes of Viola Pugh in terms of what she gave to the City. She touched the lives of so many kids over the years who will never forget her. I am one. God Bless her.

August 6, 2011

To David and the Sheffield Family, our heartfelt sympathy on the passing of Viola. She had a great life on earth and an even greater experience is hers now in heaven. Some of my fondest childhood memories were her teaching so many of us kids to skate and encouraging us at the Recreation Center. Know you are proud of your Mom. While it is hard to part, you can celebrate her homecoming. Kim and Will Buck

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. She was a very special woman who touched many lives in Charlottesville. I can still remember the days at the rec center and roller skating.

I fondly remember many great times spent talking with my Nanny. Hours spent pondering the world over a slurpy.

My Nanny was a woman of quiet strength and wisdom. She was part of a great generation that is leaving us too quickly.

I will always cherish the time I spent with her. She is at peace now. Christopher, Ashleigh, Mason and I will miss her.
