Winnie was employed by Blue Ridge School and Morton Frozen Foods for many years. She was a member of Evergreen Church of the Brethren.
Winnie will be remembered for making hundreds of comforters, many of which she gave to friends, relatives, family and some she gave to non-profit groups, such as GRACE (Greene Alliance of Church and Community Efforts) and Evergreen Church of the Brethren Women's Fellowship. This was an art that her foster mother taught her as a child and as a young woman growing up on Wyatt's Mountain. Winnie possessed a strong and determined spirit to achieve unbelievable tasks, such as rearing her four children when her husband died September 4, 1954, of leukemia and overcoming obstacles in her life like when she experienced a major burn in October of 2005.
Winnie had a remarkable commitment to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She had great love for her friends, relatives and special neighbors that lived near her and in the many places that she resided.
Birthdays were always special to Winnie and she could recall everyone's birthday, although she did not read or write, she was blessed with a wonderful memory. Her memory could be considered a walking dictionary with a great deal of information and knowledge.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at Evergreen Church of the Brethren with the Reverend Jim Eberly and the Reverend David J. Morris officiating.
