Myron Bromberg Obituary

Myron J. "Mike" Bromberg

AGE: 81 •

Myron J. "Mike" Bromberg passed away on April 30, 2016 at the age of 81.

Mike was born and raised in Passaic, New Jersey. He was a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy, Yale University and Columbia University School of Law. Upon graduation from Columbia in 1960, Mike joined the practice of Ralph Porzio. Two years later, they recruited John M. Newman to form what is now Porzio, Bromberg & Newman. Mike served as the firm's managing principal for 28 years, guiding it from a five lawyer general practice firm to one of the most highly regarded law firms in the state.

Mike's forte and love was trial law, he was acclaimed as one of New Jersey's leading trial lawyers of the last fifty years. He began by defending doctors in medical malpractice cases and went on to defend pharmaceutical companies in drug products liability cases. He later became national counsel for one of the world's largest mining companies in defense of asbestos litigation. Mike was involved in several major cases before the New Jersey Supreme Court, and before the Courts of Appeals for the 3rd, 8th and 11th U.S. Circuits.

He was a charter member of the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey, served as its president and received the Trial Bar Award in 1989. Mike was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Mike was a member of the International Society of Barristers and proudly served as its President from 2000 to 2001. He was also a member of the American Society of Law and Medicine, the American Judicature Society and numerous local, state, national and international law organizations.

Mike was elected to the prestigious American Law Institute and was part of the Consultative Group on Restatement of the Law (Third) of Products Liability. He served as a regular lecturer for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education and its New York counterpart, the Practicing Law Institute.

He also was an active alumnus of Columbia, Yale and Phillips Andover. Mike cherished the opportunity to mentor young lawyers, particularly those in his firm. Many of the principals of Porzio, Bromberg & Newman began their careers as summer associates or first year associates at the firm. Mike worked closely with them to hone their skills and was extraordinarily proud when they later became principals of the firm.

Mike had a great love of politics and public service. He served on the Morris County Democratic Committee throughout the '60s and '70s, including three years as the Morristown Municipal Chair. In 1970, Mike became the first Democrat in over 50 years to be elected to the Morris Township Committee.

Post-retirement, Mike enjoyed splitting his time between Morristown, New Jersey and Sea Ranch, California. He traveled extensively abroad. A true Francophile he visited France over 60 times and his "France Letter" was a coveted traveling companion. He appreciated fine food and wine and treasured his time with family and friends. Mike is survived by his wife, Lisa, sons Ken, Eric and Bruce, daughters-in-law Alison, Ellen and Kerry, and grandchildren Danielle, Brian, Leah, Jason, Brett and Tanner. As anyone who spent any time with Mike knew, he was justly proud of the Bromberg Brothers restaurant "empire" and their Blue Ribbon Restaurants in New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and London.

A Célébration de la Vie will take place on Tuesday, May 10 at Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, 100 Southgate Parkway, Morristown, NJ. Although I have never met Mike in person I have spoken to him many times by telephone. He always left a lasting impression with me on the matters that needed to be taken care of. Even with intense matters that needed special care, he was always there to work things through. His passing will leave a void in my life that can never be filled. It has been an honor to have known him...

My late father, Robert Bobrow and Mike (as I remember) had triple B realty in Morristown, NJ many years ago...

although the places have changed, and Morristown too, the memories of those years ring true- even to this day- so far in the future.

Sorry for your loss.

Myron J. Bromberg will always be a 'giant' in my eyes. I treasured his guidance and friendship - his inspiration and wisdom I carry with me always. Mike was so kind to people... He loved his sons dearly and spoke extensively about Bruce, Eric and Kenny every meeting we had together.

Mike was a great man. He will be deeply missed. My mother Judy and her brother Robert Cohen grew up with him in Lake Hopatcong and I had the great good fortune of meeting him and Lisa a few years ago. He was one of a kind. Our warmest wishes to his whole family.

I am so saddened to learn of Mike's death. I ( along with my wife Audrey, who passed away 3 years ago) were class mates and friends of Mike's at Columbia Law School. He was a warm, funny, brilliant, and sensitive person, who was wonderful to be around. My thoughts are with Lisa and his sons, who he was so proud of.
With my love, Ralph Goldberg
