Donald Carroll Obituary

Carroll, Donald Brooks Donald Carroll born in Dallas in 1940, passed away at his home in southwestern France on December 30, 2010. Donald attended the University of Texas and Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland where he founded the literary magazine, The Dubliner. With the publishing of his own poems he began his long literary career. He moved to London in the 1960's and established his own publishing company with The Liverpool Scene, introducing the influential Liverpool poets to the world, among his many books well known to the literary movement. In 1972 he moved back to the U.S,, living in Los Angeles and later New York. He continued to write national newspaper and magazine articles, in addition to several humorous books, including Dear Sir Drop Dead: Hate Mail Through the Ages, securing him an interview on NBC's Today Show. Donald later moved to Turkey where he wrote the award winning Insider's Guide To Turkey. In Turkey he became fascinated with the excavations at Ephesus that led to his book Mary's House and established his reputation as an expert on the history and discovery of the House of the Virgin Mary at Epshesus. Since 1997 he has lived in France. Donald was predeceased by his brother and sister in law Tim and Andrea Carroll, and his parents Jim and Miriam Carroll of Dallas, TX. He is survived by his wife Louise Flynn Carroll, sister Linda Carroll Earnhart of Dallas TX; children Paul Carroll of Texas, Denise Bancroft of England, Timothy Carroll of England and Adrian Carroll of California as well as four grandchildren.
