Richard Anderson Obituary

Anderson, Dr. Richard W. Dr. Anderson (Andy) was born in Janesville, Wisconsin May 6, 1923 and passed away July 31, 2011 in Dallas, Texas with Charlotte his loving and caring wife of ten years at his side. Andy grew up on a farm in Janesville with his 10 other siblings. Andy was preceded in death by his wife Bessanne Mills Anderson and his two sons Richard W. Jr. and Jeffrey L. Anderson. An advocate of the osteopathic profession since he was a teenager, Andy was influenced by his older brother, Esmond, also a D.O., and now deceased, who practiced in their hometown of Janesville. He said Esmond, was his earliest role model. In 1946, Andy graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, and interned from 1946 to 1947 at Lakeview Hospital in Milwaukee. Dr. Anderson served on the Kirksville Osteopathic Alumni Association (KOAA) Board of Directors for nine years (1991-2000), a member of the Board of Trustees of A.T. Still University, and in 2002, the KOAA Board of Directors selected him as the KOAA's Alumnus of the Year. From 1948 to 1968, Dr. Anderson practiced in Cudahy, WI while also serving as a physician for the Cudahy Board of Education. He was certified in General Practice in 1973 by the American College of Osteopathic Board of General Practice and served as part-time Medical Director of East Town Osteopathic Hospital in Dallas, TX from 1983 to 1988. Additionally, he was a member of the committee of post-doctoral training of the American Osteopathic Association from 1977 to 1982 and served as an inspector for the committee of postdoctoral training of interns and residents in osteopathic and allopathic hospitals for 20 years. In 1980, he was the National Program Chairman for the American College of Osteopathic Physicians in General Practice. In 1983, he was named General Practitioner of the Year by the Texas Society of General Practice. In 1985 he was the Program Chairman of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association State Convention. And in 1986 the Texas Society of General Practice named Andy as General Practitioner of the Year. Andy was a proud member of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association. He had also been Chairman of the Sam & Marille Sparks East Town Osteopathic Foundation in Dallas, TX since 1996. He served on the board of the Lutheran Sunset Home in Clifton, TX from 2001 to 2005. Andy was National Program Chairman for the American College of Osteopathic Physicians in General Practice in 1980 and was Program Chairman of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association State Convention in 1985. January 2, 2009. He was recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of steopathic medicine. Through his life he has supported many YMCA chapters, serving as Chairman of the Southeastern Milwaukee, Wisconsin branch of the YMCA from 1953 to 1960 and a member of the White Rock YMCA board in Dallas from 1970 to 1973. For Andy, it was always about being an osteopathic family physician, not being merely a family physician. "I have always felt very fortunate and blessed to be an osteopathic physician that could practice family medicine and also use osteopathic manipulation," said Dr. Anderson, who retired from his solo practice in Mesquite, Texas, in 1998 to his home in Dallas. He is survived by his wife Charlotte Rock Anderson, two grandsons, Richard W. III and Steven Anderson, step daughter Kathie Sevener of Grand Prairie, step grandchildren Tim and Kelley Tyree of Mansfield, Austin and Toni Sevener of Fort Worth, Kimberly Sevener of Grand Prairie, Courtney Sevener of Austin and step great-great-granddaughter Kynlie Tyree. Andy had a saying that "If you love what you doing, you will never work a day in your life." Andy loved what he did and will be missed by all his patients, friends, and family. Visitation and a Celebration of his life will be August 2nd from 6 to 8pm, in the Chapel at the Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 West Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225. Services will be held August 3rd at 2pm at Sparkman/Hillcrest, 7405 West Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225. Interment will be at Restland Memorial Park. Charlotte and family,

Though Andy now rests without pain or suffering, we who are left must bear the burden of mourning. No obituary; no eulogy; indeed, no word, written or uttered, can hope to summarize, let alone reflect, the significance of Andy's life. He was a man who continually taught us from his brilliance and grace, who critiqued and guided us, and always supported us in all we chose to do. In the end, one of our greatest honors is to be counted as "Andy's friends." Osteopathic Medicine has been blessed with no greater ambassador than Dr. Anderson.

Be assured you remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Charlotte & Family:

I am so sad to hear of Dr. Anderson's passing. As a longtime employee of ATSU-KCOM, I had many opportunities to work with him as an very active and dedicated alumnus who became a friend. The gleam in his eye, the peep in his step, and his enthusiasm were something I could always rely on, and it was a joy to spend time with him.

I will miss him dearly, but what a wonderful life, lived well! He's a great example for all of us.

Fondly,
Janet Bunch

Dr. Anderson was a fine physician to me and my family. He later became a wonderful friend who was like a family member. Both he and Charlotte were an important part of our lives. I will always cherish our travels in Norway with them. He will be truly missed. My deepest sympathy to Charlotte in her time of grief. Lovingly, Janet
